The three Oxford Guides to Chaucer are written by scholars of international repute, with the purpose of summarizing what is known about his works and offering interpretations based on recent advances in both historical knowledge and theoretical understanding. Barry Windeatt's volume on Troilus and Criseyde examines the poem that is Chaucer's most ambitious single achievement, his masterpiece, and one of the very finest narrative poems in the English language. The story of love fulfilled and trust betrayed - of how Troilus and Criseyde discover love, and how she abandons him for Diomede after her departure from Troy - is presented by Chaucer with profound insight into human character and explored through its philosophical and spiritual dimensions. This Oxford Guide is the most comprehensive introduction to Troilus and Criseyde yet produced. It includes the fullest and most convenient account of Chaucer's imaginative use of his sources, the first extended analysis of the poem's originality of genre, and a readable commentary on all aspects of the work, its structure, themes, characterization, and style. It also contains a survey of literary responses to Troilus in the three centuries following Chaucer's death. The Guide combines the informative substance of a reference book with the coherence of a critical reading, and is set to establish itself as a standard work on Troilus and Criseyde

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ARC IN A GERDIEN-TYPE PLASMA GENERATOR ( file )
2 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
The charaterisics of the arc in a d-c arc plasma generator having a Gerdien-type electrode configuration are described. Emphasis is placed on the jet structure and its influence on the use of this generator as a research, hot gas source. An explanation of the experimental methods used to determine the true arc configuration is included. These methods consisted of probe studies. The investigation was made in a low pressure test cell at atmospheric pressure. Results show that at atmospheric pressure the observed flame exiting from the generator orifice is the envelope of many blown arcs. In the low pressure test cell, the expanded flame is found to be free of these blown arcs; instead the arc is contained in a smll section near the orifice exit

The radiative decay of metastable argon atoms in a low-density argon plasma stream ( Book )
1 edition published in 1963 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
A low-density, luminous, supersonic, argon plasma stream about one meter in length produced by a conventional d-c arc plasma generator was s udied spectroscopically. The spectra consisted of neutral argon atom lines and second positive nitrogen bands. Stream enthalpy and velocity calculations rule out thermal excita ion and electron-ion recombina ion as sources of the radiation. Radiative decay of met stable argon atoms will, however, account for the long lifetimes of the radiating argon and also for the excitation of the nitrogen, which enters the stream by mixing with the ambient test cell gas. The existence of metastable atoms and their behavior re further examined by use of additive gases. Atoms with excitation levels below the potential of the argon metasta les (hydrogen and krypton) tend to quench the radiation, whereas those with higher excitation levels (helium and neon) have no effect on the argon metastables, and their presence is not spectroscopically detectable. The existence of metastable atoms and the fact that he stream luminosity is caused by their radiative decay plays an important role in diagnostic techniques and renders conventional spectroscopic and probe procedures of lit l us . he discovery of t e metastables within the gas s ream, however, provides a further aven e to studi s of collision processes.
