"Obwohl Ligeti mit der Vertonung der Totenmesse eine Jahrhunderte alte Tradition fortführt, ist seine Komposition keineswegs als eine traditionelle zu bezeichnen, sie knüpft überhaupt nicht an früheren Requiem-Kompositionen an. Was sofort ins Auge springt, ist, dass Ligeti nicht den ganzen Text der Totenmesse vertont, sondern lediglich den Introitus, die Kyrie und die Totensequenz. [...] Andererseits fällt auf, dass der liturgische Text in der Komposition lediglich versteckt, gleichsam subkutan präsent ist. Nicht die Bedeutung oder der affektive Inhalt sondern der akustische Klang des Textes steht im Vordergrund, und zwar mit all seinen plastischen" physischen"Eigenschaften - mit seinen Farben, mit seiner Intensität, mit seiner Masse und Dichte. [...] Die Komposition Apparitions nimmt in Ligetis Œuvre einen ganz besonderen Platz ein. Sie ist das erste Instrumentalwerk, das Ligeti nach seiner Emigration komponierte, und sie ist zugleich die Komposition, mit der Ligeti international Aufsehen erregte. Die Uraufführung fand im Juni 1960 im Rahmen des Kölner Musikfestes der Internationalen Gesellschaft für Neue Musik statt. Die 1958/1959 entstandene Komposition demonstriert, welchen gewaltigen Änderungen Ligetis musikalisches Denken nach 1956 unterworfen war.
