The global Africa project ( Book )
7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 288 libraries worldwide
"This book provides a savvy survey of the latest work by designers, craftspeople, and architects of African descent from around the world. Artists and designers of African ancestry--many in Africa but also others throughout Europe, the Americas, and the Far East--are working in a wide array of mediums: fashion, architecture, non-traditional crafts, design, fine art, and photography. Authors Lowery Stokes Sims and Leslie King-Hammond, together with six contributors, challenge presumptions of what constitutes an "African" style or aesthetic, and demonstrate the power and expressive potential of materials, textures and forms. Work by well-known artists such as Yinka Shonibare, MBE and architects including David Adjaye appear alongside those of lesser-known but equally exciting designers whose garments, carpets, baskets, ceramics, furniture, body arts, wall painting, photographs and sculpture blur the distinction between art and craft. The result is an enormously diverse display of young and established talent, and a wide-ranging survey of contemporary African art and design."--Publisher's website
Elizabeth Catlett sculpture : a fifty-year retrospective by Elizabeth Catlett( Book )
2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 267 libraries worldwide
"This monograph covers a fifty-year period from 1946-1996 in the life's work of the renowned African-American artist Elizabeth Catlett. Catlett was born and raised in Washington, DC. She received her B.A. in painting from Howard University in Washington and her M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa. From the beginning of her career as an artist and a teacher in the early 1940s, Catlett's themes have reflected her concerns for social injustice, the human condition, and her life as an African-American woman and mother. Formally, her sculpture draws upon African and pre-Columbian traditions, as well as early modernism in Europe, the United States and Mexico. For a period of twenty years Catlett was involved with the Taller de Grafica Popular, a collaborative print-making workshop that addressed the concerns of working people. She has exhibited her work internationally and it is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and The Studio Museum of Harlem in New York City, among many others."--Jacket

New territories : laboratories for design, craft and art in Latin America ( Book )
4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 148 libraries worldwide
New Territories examines creative practices in today's globalized world, in which disciplines overlap more than ever before. Looking in particular at countries such as Brazil, Cuba, Panama, Columbia, Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Chile, this volume discusses the ways in which craft, art and design have transcended their former identities. Today, artists in these fields may address issues of not only commodification and mass production, but also social concerns of urbanization, displacement, housing and sustainability. Including the work of more than 100 artists, designers/design studios and artisans, New Territories sets out to explore the present state of design--much of which has emerged from interfaces between manufacturers, folk artisans, indigenous artists and designers--and its future
