Belge d'origine, un des grands auteurs du genre, tant par la variété et la versatilité que par un certain ton humoristique très spécial qui confère au personnage d'une dizaine de ses romans, "Monsieur Wens", un charme assez singulier. Auteur à succès constamment réédité et souvent adapté au cinéma; on peut préférer ses romans d'avant-guerre à ses plus récents qui avaient perdu un peu d'impact, mais il demeurera surtout exemplaire pour ce qu'on pourrait appeler la mise en place technique de procédés astucieux qui font de ses romans des énigmes véritables et originales. Ce premier tome contient huit romans et treize nouvelles publiés entre 1929 et 1932
