Snails : archaeology and landscape change by Paul Davies( Book )
14 editions published between 2008 and 2016 in English and held by 138 libraries worldwide
"The fact that shells remain preserved in some ancient sediments and soils, and can be used for environmental reconstruction, has been known for over a century. It is now over thirty years since the first textbook on sub-fossil molluscan analysis as applied to the British Isles appeared and, since then, both sub-fossil molluscan studies and archaeology have changed a good deal. The latter, in particular, has become more interested in 'off-site' contexts and the creation and modification of 'landscapes' as a whole, areas of study in which Mollusca were already proven as a useful biological tool. Molluscan analysis itself has adopted, or at least tried, various sampling and interpretative strategies, and obviously amassed a great deal more data." "This book covers the general principles and methods, the importance of understanding modern molluscan ecology and discusses recent studies and advances in archaeologically related molluscan research. On a more general level, it takes a broad European perspective and provides case studies from non-archaeological contexts including chapters on wet-ground deposits such as tufa and overbank alluvium, colluvial, scree and cave deposits, blown sand, and fluvial deposits such as lake and channel fills. In this respect the book largely takes a contextual approach, providing commentary and case-studies according to the types of sediments involved rather than adopting a strict chronological approach to late-Quaternary landscape development."--Jacket

An architect's guide to fame by Paul Davies( Book )
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 86 libraries worldwide
This lively text provides a candid inquiry into the contemporary means by which architects get work and (for better or worse) become famous. In response to the reciprocal relationship between publicity and everyday architectural practice, this book examines the mechanisms by which architects seek publicity and manage to establish themselves and their work ahead of their colleagues. Through the essays of specialist contributors, this book enables the reader to understand the complex relationship between what they see as the built environment and the unwritten stories behind how it came about. Internationally known architects bring an insider's view of the profession to life. The book shows architects how to establish a strong reputation in one of the most competitive professional fields, and links themes of contemporary culture to key architectural issues

How much do you know about Greek architecture? Roman? Gothic? The Renaissance? Modernism? Perhaps more importantly, do you know how these are connected or how one style evolved to become another? Or what happened historically during each of these periods? Architectural History Retold is your roadmap for your journey through architectural history. Offering a fresh take on what the author calls the 'Great Enlightenment project', it traces the grand narrative of western architecture in one concise, accessible volume. Starting in Ancient Greece and leading up to the present day, Paul Davies' unconventional, engaging style brings the past back to life, helping you to think beyond separate components and styles to recognise 'the bigger picture'. The author is an academic and journalist with three decades of experience in introducing students to architectural history.-
