Beyond belief : science, reason, religion & survival ( visu )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
"Just 40 years after a famous TIME magazine cover asked "Is God Dead?" the answer appears to be a resounding "No!" According to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life in a recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine, "God is Winning". Religions are increasingly a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Fundamentalist movements - some violent in the extreme - are growing. Science and religion are at odds in the classrooms and courtrooms. And a return to religious values is widely touted as an antidote to the alleged decline in public morality. After two centuries, could this be twilight for the Enlightenment project and the beginning of a new age of unreason? Will faith and dogma trump rational inquiry, or will it be possible to reconcile religious and scientific worldviews? Can evolutionary biology, anthropology and neuroscience help us to better understand how we construct beliefs, and experience empathy, fear and awe? Can science help us create a new rational narrative as poetic and powerful as those that have traditionally sustained societies? Can we treat religion as a natural phenomenon? Can we be good without God? And if not God, then what? This is a critical moment in the human situation, and The Science Network in association with the Crick-Jacobs Center brought together an extraordinary group of scientists and philosophers to explore answers to these questions".--Website

Conversations on consciousness : what the best minds think about the brain, free will, and what it means to be human by Susan J Blackmore( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
In Conversations on Consciousness, Susan Blackmore interviews some of the great minds of our time, a who's who of eminent thinkers, all of whom have devoted much of their lives to understanding the concept of consciousness. The interviewees, ranging from major philosophers to renowned scientists, talk with Blackmore about some of the key philosophical issues confronting us in a series of conversations. They ruminate on the nature of consciousness (is it something apart from the brain?) and discuss if it is even possible to understand the human mind. Some of these thinkers say no, but most believe that we will pierce the mystery surrounding consciousness, and that neuroscience will provide the key. Blackmore goes beyond the issue of consciousness to ask other intriguing questions: Is there free will? (A question which yields many conflicted replies, with most saying yes and no.) If not, how does this effect the way you live your life; and more broadly, how has your work changed the way you live? --From publisher's description

The day I died ( visu )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
Various people recount their near-death experiences; scientists attempt to analyse what these kind of experiences are really about and, in particular, at which point during the dying process they occur. The opinions of the experts differ as near-death experience can be accounted for by neurological responses to oxygen starvation, endorphine rushes etc. But if the experience occurs in the brain, how can it happen when the brain itself has died? Pam Reynolds had an enormous brain aneurysm which she was not expected to survive. Neurosurgeon Robert Spetzler agreed to operate and during the surgery Pam had one of the most detailed near-death experiences while known to be clinically dead - she recounts her experience in full. Professor Stuart Hameroff has been collaborating with Roger Penrose to formulate a theory of consciousness / the mind which can account for near-death experiences. The last word in the programme comes from those whose lives have changed profoundly since their near-death experience
