13 editions published in 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 214 libraries worldwide
The possibility of direct interfacing between biological and technological information devices could result in a merger of mind and machine - Ultimate Computing. This book, a thorough consideration of this idea, involves a number of disciplines, including biochemistry, cognitive science, computer science, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, philosophy, physics, physiology, and psychology
Consciousness and the universe : quantum physics, evolution, brain & mind ( Book )

Modifying chronic pain diagnosis and treatment by Burnell R Brown( visu )
2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 20 libraries worldwide
Patients with intractable pain present a confusing and challenging situation. Dr. Brown and associates provide insights on how to conduct a workup for both treating and/or referring a patient with chronic pain. Included are new thoughts on when and how to apply seven treatment modalities: trigger piont injections, drugs, transcutaneous nerve stimulators, acpuncture, relaxation and biofeedback techniques, nerve blocks, and physical rehabilitation. New directions in pain control research, especially the implications of endorphins, add to your armamentarium

Beyond belief science, reason, religion & survival ( visu )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
"Just 40 years after a famous TIME magazine cover asked "Is God Dead?" the answer appears to be a resounding "No!" According to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life in a recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine, "God is Winning". Religions are increasingly a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Fundamentalist movements - some violent in the extreme - are growing. Science and religion are at odds in the classrooms and courtrooms. And a return to religious values is widely touted as an antidote to the alleged decline in public morality. After two centuries, could this be twilight for the Enlightenment project and the beginning of a new age of unreason? Will faith and dogma trump rational inquiry, or will it be possible to reconcile religious and scientific worldviews? Can evolutionary biology, anthropology and neuroscience help us to better understand how we construct beliefs, and experience empathy, fear and awe? Can science help us create a new rational narrative as poetic and powerful as those that have traditionally sustained societies? Can we treat religion as a natural phenomenon? Can we be good without God? And if not God, then what? This is a critical moment in the human situation, and The Science Network in association with the Crick-Jacobs Center brought together an extraordinary group of scientists and philosophers to explore answers to these questions".--Website
Consciousness : a very short introduction by Susan J Blackmore( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
"Consciousness, 'the last great mystery for science', has now become a hot topic. How can a physical brain create our experience of the world? What creates our identity? Do we really have free will? Could consciousness itself be an illusion? Exciting new developments in brain science are opening up debates on these issues, and the field has now expanded to include biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers. This controversial book clarifies the potentially confusing arguments, and the major theories using illustrations, lively cartoons, and experiments. Topics include vision and attention, theories of self and will, experiments on action and awareness, altered states of consciousness, and the effects of brain damage and drugs."--Publisher's description

The day I died : the mind, the brain, and near-death experiences ( visu )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
Various people recount their near-death experiences; scientists attempt to analyse what these kind of experiences are really about and, in particular, at which point during the dying process they occur. The opinions of the experts differ as near-death experience can be accounted for by neurological responses to oxygen starvation, endorphine rushes etc. But if the experience occurs in the brain, how can it happen when the brain itself has died? Pam Reynolds had an enormous brain aneurysm which she was not expected to survive. Neurosurgeon Robert Spetzler agreed to operate and during the surgery Pam had one of the most detailed near-death experiences while known to be clinically dead - she recounts her experience in full. Professor Stuart Hameroff has been collaborating with Roger Penrose to formulate a theory of consciousness / the mind which can account for near-death experiences. The last word in the programme comes from those whose lives have changed profoundly since their near-death experience
