The cultural front : the laboring of American culture in the Twentieth Century by Michael Denning( Book )
31 editions published between 1996 and 2010 in English and held by 834 libraries worldwide
A major reassessment of US cultural history, The Cultural Front is a mural of the extraordinary upsurge which reshaped American modernism and mass culture in the middle decades of the 20th century. Born as a proletarian avant-garde in the wake of the General Strikes of 1934, the cultural front came of age in the labor movement, the New Deal arts projects, and the film, radio and recording studios. Its successes provoked a cultural civil war, as mid-century America was dominated by Congressional investigations, Hollywood blacklists, and the red scare. Beginning with a historical overview of the Popular Front social movement, and of the rise of the modern cultural apparatus, Michael Denning reconsiders the work and politics of two generations of artists, writers and intellectualscelebrated figures like Welles, Holiday, Ellington, John Dos Passos, Woody Guthrie, Tillie Olsen and Richard Wright as well as lesser-known figures like fashion designer Elizabeth Hawes, Japanese emigre feminist Haru Matsui, bricklayer novelist Pietro di Donato, and blues singer Josh White - and illuminates their social consciousness and political unconscious, as they struggled to create a genuinely democratic popular culture
Mechanic accents : dime novels and working-class culture in America by Michael Denning( Book )
22 editions published between 1987 and 1998 in English and held by 813 libraries worldwide
"Mechanic Accents is a study of American popular fiction and working-class culture. Combining Marxist literary theory with American labor history, Michael Denning explores what happened when, in the nineteenth century, working people began to read cheap novels and the 'fiction question' became a class question. In a new afterword, Denning locates his study within the context of current debates on class and cultural studies."--Jacket
Noise uprising : the audiopolitics of a world musical revolution by Michael Denning( Book )
5 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 391 libraries worldwide
Noise Uprising brings to life the moment and sounds of a cultural revolution. Between the development of electrical recording in 1925 and the outset of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, the soundscape of modern times unfolded in a series of obscure recording sessions, as hundreds of unknown musicians entered makeshift studios to record the melodies and rhythms of urban streets and dancehalls. The musical styles and idioms etched onto shellac disks reverberated around the globe: among them Havana's son, Rio's samba, New Orleans' jazz, Buenos Aires' tango, Seville's flamenco, Cairo's tarab, Johannesburg's marabi, Jakarta's kroncong, and Honolulu's hula. They triggered the first great battle over popular music and became the soundtrack to decolonization. -- from back cover
Cover stories : narrative and ideology in the British spy thriller by Michael Denning( Book )
18 editions published between 1987 and 2014 in English and held by 370 libraries worldwide
First published in 1987, this title tracks the spy thriller from John Buchanan to Eric Ambler, Ian Fleming and John Le Carr , and shows how these tales of spies, moles, and the secret service tell a history of modern society, translating the political and cultural transformations of the twentieth century into the intrigues of a shadow world of secret agents. Combining cultural history with narrative analysis, Cover Stories explores the two main traditions of the thriller: the thriller of the work, in which bureaucratic routines are invested with

Composing American Individualism: Luciano Berio in the United States, 1960-1971 by Tiffany M Kuo( file )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
Concurrently, this dissertation addresses Cold War politics of 1960s America as they relate to the composition, production, and reception of the three works discussed: Traces, Passaggio, and Sinfonia. I situate the recurring American Cold War rhetoric of "freedom and democracy" within the contemporaneous political concepts of George Kennan's containment and forbearance, Isaiah Berlin's positive and negative liberties, and Herbert Marcuse's individuality. In doing so, I interrogate the liberties--such as rights, responsibilities, choices, capabilities, and limitations--of individuals in the concert music-making culture. And last, I argue for a more complex understanding of politics and music in the 1960s American concert-music landscape that includes the dissonant voices among government officials, non-governmental-organization bureaucrats, private philanthropists, economists, and the American listening public
