The Bible in/and popular culture : a creative encounter ( Book )
14 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 370 libraries worldwide
In popular culture, the Bible is generally associated with films: The Passion of the Christ, The Ten Commandments, Jesus of Montreal, and many others. Less attention has been given to the relationship between the Bible and other popular media such as hip-hop, reggae, rock, and country and western music; popular and graphic novels; animated television series; and apocalyptic fantasy. This collection of essays explores a range of media and the way the Bible features in them, applying various hermeneutical approaches, engaging with critical theory, and providing conceptual resources and examples of how the Bible reads popular culture and how popular culture reads the Bible. --From publisher's description

Caring for God's people : counseling and Christian wholeness by Philip Leroy Culbertson( Book )
4 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 152 libraries worldwide
Culbertson has built his text around the ideal of Christian wholeness and maturity-a healthy interconnectedness of self-within-community. Culbertson presents three schools of counseling theory: family systems theory, narrative counseling theory, and object relations theory. Each of these is explained and then applied to various counseling situations: pre-marital counseling, marriage counseling, divorce counseling, counseling gay men and women, and grief counseling. Culbertson addresses issues of gender, families, sexual orientation, the relationship of emotions to spirituality, and the relevance of the counselor's own self-understanding.--From publisher's description
The spirituality of men : sixteen Christians write about their faith ( Book )
3 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 146 libraries worldwide
Spirit possession, theology, and identity : a Pacific exploration ( Book )
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 67 libraries worldwide
The growing contemporary interest in spirit possession prompted eleven past and present faculty members of The University of Auckland's School of Theology along with two of the School's recent post-graduate students to offer essays that in some way explored the reality of spirit possession in Oceania today. Authors were chosen because of their particular research teaching or ministry competencies, and this explains the division of the book into three sections. The first section draws on the experiences of those engaged in pastoral ministry with people who believe they are possessed or those whose particular research interests are the relationship of faith culture and praxis. In the second section, the function and place of spirit language in the biblical texts is examined, while the last section's focus is somewhat broader, addressing some of the historical responses to spirit possession, as well as emerging pneumatologies of good and bad spirits and their impact on the human condition
Pacific identities and well-being : cross-cultural perspectives by Margaret Nelson Agee( Book )
3 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 60 libraries worldwide
Filling a significant gap in the cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary literature within the field of Pasifika (Polynesian) and Maori identities and mental health, this volume focuses on bridging mental health related research and practice within the indigenous communities of the South Pacific. Much of the content reflects both differences from and relationships with the dominant Western theories and practices so often unsuccessfully applied with these groups
Forging the male spirit : the spiritual lives of American college men by W. Merle Longwood( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 54 libraries worldwide
Young men undergo significant changes during their years in college. They wrestle with "big questions," which are essentially spiritual questions, as they ponder who they are, what they believe, what kind of persons they want to become, and how they might shape the world into something they can feel comfortable being themselves in. Those who participate in men's groups realize that their involvement can nurture their inner lives as they explore these questions and connect to transcendent values and a vision of a larger whole. This book includes historical and sociological perspectives on men and spirituality and an expanded case study of how one campus pioneered in the development of men's spirituality groups, which became a model for other campuses. It includes quantitative empirical research that explores college men's openness to spirituality and their interest in men's groups. The book's most extensive discussion is based on a qualitative analysis of thirty-six interviews with male college students, focusing on their understanding of the relationship between their masculinity and their spirituality, and how spirituality groups provided a venue in which they could begin to engage what it means to be spiritual and what it means to be a man
