Carl Maria von Webers romantisches Meisterwerk "Der Freischütz", nach einem Libretto von Johann Friedrich Kind, gilt als erste deutsche Nationaloper. Die vorliegende Aufnahme präsentiert Webers geniales Werk in einer Inszenierung der "Grande Dame des Regietheaters" Ruth Berghaus (1927-1996), die diesen Freischütz 1993 für das Opernhaus Zürich inszenierte. Eine Weideraufnahme bot 1999 Gelegenheit, ihre Arbeit exemplarisch zu dokumentieren. Fast alle Opernproduktionen von Ruth Berghaus wurden als "höchst kontrovers" bezeichnet, und auch der Freischütz bildet keine Ausnahme. Mit ihrem Stil erteilte die Regisseurin dem Naturalismus häufig eine radikale Absage. Bildsprache, Signale, Gestik und visuelle Brüche waren ihr wichtiger als das Nacherzählen der Handlung. Eine hervorragende Sängerriege - darunter die Sopranistin Inga Niesen als Agathe, der Tenor Peter Seiffert als Max und der Bass Matti Salminen als Kaspar - steht dem Dirigenten Nikolaus Harnoncourt zur Seite, der sich die satte Akustik des Züricher Opernhaus zu Nutze macht und die Klangbilder der Partitur in kräftigen Farben nachzeichnet
