Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer Ned Rorem. Ned Rorem talks about his career as a composer and a writer. Being one of America's most renowned and prolific composers of art song, he speaks about the difference between writing music for singers and for song recitals, and between classical and popular music. He talks about his popularity as a songwriter although 80% of his work, including the piece that won the Pulitzer Prize, is non-vocal. He comments on poetry that inspires him to write songs, combining literature and music. He talks in detail about the process of composing songs based on various poems. He also discusses his diary (Paris diary), and describes himself as a musician who writes rather than a writer who composes. At the end of the interview Rorem gives advice to young composers. During the interview selections from some of his early songs and instrumental work Water music (1966) are played
