For a woman living in the early 19th century, Mary Martha Sherwood led a very unusual life. Rather than be confined to domestic life in England, Sherwood was able to travel to India with her army husband, Captain Henry Sherwood. Sherwood faced many challenges while in India. On the journey over, French warships attacked the ship on which she and her husband were traveling. Additionally, Sherwood gave birth to six children while living in India, four of whom died soon after their births. Despite her trials, Sherwood was deeply affected by her time in India.€ Life in India drew Sherwood to evangelical Christianity, and she became determined to partake in missionary work in the country. She established schools for the children of the British army officer and for local Indian children and taught the pupils out of her own home. It was during this time that Sherwood began creating her own stories for her students, many of which became incredibly popular.€The Life of Mrs. Sherwood€details Mary Martha Sherwood life from her beginnings in England to her time in India and much more
