Nineteen species of ducks, geese and swans are native to Australia, some of them rare and in danger of extinction. Most of the continent being dry, the only extensive habitat is the Murray- Darling drainage system. Since their breeding depends on flooding, their needs conflict with water control and conservation, although a balance is possible if future projects are planned to provide for them
