Troopers with Custer; historic incidents of the Battle of the Little Big Horn by E. A Brininstool( Book )
17 editions published between 1952 and 1994 in English and held by 674 libraries worldwide
"Troopers with Custer, first published in 1925 as A trooper with Custer, has been greatly expanded in text and illustrations, many from the author's greatly prized album of photographs showing the important battle participants, on both sides, and the battlefield terrain itself. Many of the illustrations are here shown for the first time. This edition includes much new material gathered by the author over the decades since the appearance of the small original edition, which has been out of print for many years and has been much sought after by collectors. Starting with a dramatic first chapter on the battle and the events immediately preceding, the book moves into eye-witness reports of well-known participants, including Captain Frederick W. Benteen and Colonel Charles A. Varnum; recounts the thrilling escape of DeRudio and O'Neil from the Indians; the account of Trumpeter Marin, who carried the famous message from Custer to Bentee; the story of Comanche, sole survivor of the battle; General John Gibbon's opinion of the treatment accorded the Indians by the United States government; a factual description of the heroic action of the famous 'water detail'; and many other dramatic incidents. The author investigates and reports on such intriguing and disputed questions as -- Was there a Custer survivor? Were Custer's remains ever positively identified? Was Major Reno a coward? And for the first time the famous letter from Major Brisbin to Colonel Godfrey appears in print, adding fresh fuel to the controversial fire which has raged among pro and anti-Custerites for three-quarters of a century"--Jacket
