Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám by Omar Khayyam( Book )
52 editions published between 1907 and 2010 in English and held by 1,237 libraries worldwide
In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love

5 editions published in 1896 in English and held by 58 libraries worldwide
An immediate success upon its initial publication in 1653, The Compleat Angler has since become the most reprinted secular book in the English language. Here we join Piscator, Venator, and Auceps on a morning journey through the English countryside as Piscator advises on catching and eating different species of fish and expounds upon the satisfactions of the fisherman's life. More than a guide to the subtle intricacies of the sport, Walton's treatise is a graceful portrait of a simple life made rich by virtue and good friendship. -- from back cover
The French revolution : a history by Thomas Carlyle( Book )
5 editions published in 1910 in English and held by 53 libraries worldwide
The book that established Thomas Carlyle's reputation when first published in 1837, this spectacular historical masterpiece has since been accepted as the standard work on the subject. It combines a shrewd insight into character, a vivid realization of the picturesque, and a singular ability to bring the past to blazing life, making it a reading experience as thrilling as any novel. As John D. Rosenberg observes in his Introduction, The French Revolution is "one of the grand poems of [Carlyle's] century, yet its poetry consists in being everywhere scrupulously rooted in historical fact." Model-based processing for underwater acoustic arrays by Edmund J Sullivan( Book )
5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 10 libraries worldwide
This monograph presents a unified approach to model-based processing for underwater acoustic arrays. The use of physical models in passive array processing is not a new idea, but it has been used on a case-by-case basis, and as such, lacks any unifying structure. This work views all such processing methods as estimation procedures, which then can be unified by treating them all as a form of joint estimation based on a Kalman-type recursive processor, which can be recursive either in space or time, depending on the application. This is done for three reasons. First, the Kalman filter provides a natural framework for the inclusion of physical models in a processing scheme. Second, it allows poorly known model parameters to be jointly estimated along with the quantities of interest. This is important, since in certain areas of array processing already in use, such as those based on matched-field processing, the so-called mismatch problem either degrades performance or, indeed, prevents any solution at all. Thirdly, such a unification provides a formal means of quantifying the performance improvement. The term model-based will be strictly defined as the use of physics-based models as a means of introducing a priori information. This leads naturally to viewing the method as a Bayesian processor. Short expositions of estimation theory and acoustic array theory are presented, followed by a presentation of the Kalman filter in its recursive estimator form. Examples of applications to localization, bearing estimation, range estimation and model parameter estimation are provided along with experimental results verifying the method. The book is sufficiently self-contained to serve as a guide for the application of model-based array processing for the practicing engineer
