The locust years : the story of the Fourth French Republic, 1946-1958 by Frank Giles( Book )
15 editions published between 1991 and 1994 in English and held by 499 libraries worldwide
The Fourth Republic, inaugurated in the autumn of 1946 after de Gaulle's resignation as head of the provisional post-war government, was the most turbulent and fascinating period of modern French history. Under a succession of short-lived governments, battling with seemingly intractable problems at home and abroad and with a fragile balance of power among the leading parties, were laid the foundations of modern France. In this lucid, knowledgeable account, Frank Giles charts the complexities of post-war French politics with immense skill, focusing on both the men and the issues which dominated the Fourth Republic. Chief among the latter were German rearmament and nationalist uprisings in France's former colonies, notably Indochina and Algeria, and among the former Jean Monnet, who revitalized the French economy and established, with the European Coal and Steel Community, the beginnings of the EEC, and Charles de Gaulle, whose brooding presence dominated French politics until he was swept back to power during the extraordinary events of May 1958, when France found itself on the brink of civil war. Frank Giles is exceptionally well qualified to write this story. As The Times correspondent in Paris for much of the period, he had a ringside seat at many of the events he describes

Napoleon Bonaparte : England's prisoner by Frank Giles( file )
9 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 111 libraries worldwide
After his surrender to the Royal Navy, Napoleon became the object of massive English public interest. He would live out his last years on the island of St. Helena without ever admitting to being a prisoner. This close study of Napoleon in captivity attempts to reconstruct an authentic portrait of the fallen emperor by examining contemporary documents and records of public opinion. Napoleon worked hard to obfuscate his history of tyranny with a legend elevating him as the architect of a federation of free European peoples, thwarted by reactionary monarchs and British envy. Many English citizens collaborated in this legend, and joined in the condemnation of Napoleon's jailer and guardian, Sir Hudson Lowe. Frank Giles takes a fresh, balanced look at both Lowe and Napoleon, condemned to each other on an island for six years

Impact of Navigational Models on Task Completion in Web-Based Information Systems by Theodore Frick( Book )
1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
This study investigated performance differences between three different World Wide Web-based navigation models: linear, persistent, and semi-persistent menu structures. Subjects, 44 graduate and undergraduate students at Indiana University and public school teachers, were placed into one of the three navigation conditions and completed information-finding tasks. No significant differences were found among the models with respect to success in completing tasks or overall completion time. Use of other navigation aids built into the browser, such as the "home" and "back" buttons, was also measured, as well as user satisfaction and perceived usability. No differences among models were found here either. Results of this study tentatively indicate that the three navigation models, as tested, performed equally well and further that designers should give fair consideration to each of the models pending the purpose and audience of the site being designed. Further research is needed, since several potentially confounding factors were identified. (Author/MES)
