Observational astrophysics by Pierre Léna( Book )
41 editions published between 1986 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 579 libraries worldwide
Written specifically for physicists and graduate students in astronomy, this textbook focuses on astronomical observation and on the basic physical principles that astronomers use to conceive, build and exploit their instruments at their ultimate limits in sensitivity or resolution. This second edition has been entirely restructured and almost doubled in size, in order to improve its clarity and to account for the great progress achieved in the last 15 years. It deals with ground-based and space-based astronomy and their respective fields. It presents the new generation of giant ground-based telescopes, with the new methods of optical interferometry and adaptive optics, and also the ambitious concepts behind planned space missions for the next decades. Avoiding particulars, it covers the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum, and touches upon the "new astronomies" becoming possible with gravitational waves and neutrinos

The Educated Brain presents a broad overview of the major topics in this new discipline: part I examines the historical and epistemological issues related to the mind/brain problem and the scope of neuroeducation; part II provides a view of basic brain research in education and use of imaging techniques, and the study of brain and cognitive development; and part III is dedicated to the neural foundations of language and reading in different cultures and the acquisition of basic mathematical concepts
Evolution of galaxies : astronomical observations : proceedings of the Astrophysics School I, organized by the European Astrophysics Doctoral Network at Les Houches, France, 5-16 September 1988 by I Appenzeller( Book )

These eight lectures have been written up in a clear and pedagogical style in order to serve as an introduction for students to fields of modern astrophysical and astronomical research where otherwise textbooks are not available. The first four lectures cover topics in galactic astronomy (formation, structure and evolution of galaxies) and the remaining four are devoted to observational methods and astronomical instrumentation. The lecturers in the European Astrophysical Doctoral Network rank among the most highly respected specialists, and their lectures have been carefully edited and updated before publication

Lumière : une introduction aux phénomènes optiques by Pierre Léna( Book )
4 editions published in 1990 in French and held by 113 libraries worldwide
( Book )
1 edition published in 2010 in French and held by 110 libraries worldwide

8 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 27 libraries worldwide
This is the unique story of observing a total solar exlipse for no less than 74 consecutive minutes. On the summer morning of June 30, 1973, the Sun rises on the Canary Islands. But it is strangely indented by the Moon. The eclipse of the century has just begun. From the west, the lunar shadow rushes to the African coast at a velocity of over 2000 kilometers per hour. Astronomers on the ground will enjoy seven short minutes of total eclipse to study the solar corona - too short for Pierre Lena and seven scientists who board the Concorde 001 prototype, an extraordinary plane to become the first commercial supersonic aircraft. With André Turcat as chief pilot and a crew of five, at 17000 m altitude, the aircraft remains in the lunar shadow for 74 minutes, a record time of scientific observations not yet beaten and allowing for exceptional measurements. Science, technology, aviation and history combine in the story of a unique human adventure aboard a legendary aircraft, illustrated with a rich and original iconography. It reflects the wonderful domains that science and technology can open, and the passion in the professions they offer. A must read for every eclipse chaser and fan of true scientific adventures
