Introduction to post-Keynesian economics by M Lavoie( Book )
38 editions published between 2006 and 2010 in English and held by 442 libraries worldwide
"This book offers an accessible introduction to post-Keynesian economics, showing that there is an alternative to neoclassical economics and its free-market economic policies. Post-Keynesian economics is founded on realistic assumptions and stylized facts, such as interest targeting by central banks or constant average variable costs in manufacturing and services. The author shows how these more realistic foundations give rise to macroeconomic implications that are entirely different from those of received wisdom with regards to employment, output growth, inflation and monetary theory. For instance, the author demonstrates that higher minimum wages or real wages can increase both labour employment and the corporate profit rates, and that faster output growth need not lead to higher inflation."--Jacket
Monetary economics : an integrated approach to credit, money, income, production and wealth by Wynne Godley( Book )
29 editions published between 2006 and 2012 in English and held by 327 libraries worldwide
This book challenges the mainstream paradigm, which is based on the inter-temporal optimisation of welfare by individual agents. It introduces a new methodology for studying how it is institutions (firms, banks, governments, foreigners and households) which create flows of income, expenditure and production together with stocks of assets (including money) and liabilities, thereby determining how whole economies evolve through time. It is a central contention that any realistic representation of a monetary economy must be grounded in a fully articulated system of national income and flow of funds accounts which is so complete that the nth variable is logically implied by the other n-1. As the financial balances of each sector have exact counterparts in changes in stock variables, historical time is introduced into the basic system of concepts, with asset and liability stocks providing the link between each period and each succeeding period. It is taken as axiomatic that decisions are based on expectations about the future reached under conditions of uncertainty, so for every sector there must exist at least one flexible option or "buffer" over which that sector has no direct control and which adjusts passively when expectations are falsified. For firms the buffer will normally take the form of inventories, for banks and governments it will be stocks of government securities, for households it will be stocks of credit money. Accordingly, outside financial markets there is neither need nor place for equilibrium conditions to bring supply into equivalence with demand. It will almost always be quantities rather than prices which give the signals which keep the economy on track. Starting with extremely simple stock flow consistent (SFC) models, the text describes a succession of increasingly complex models, using a conventional narrative style backed up by equations which bring precision to individual propositions. However, underlying each narrative there exists a simulation model constructed with such rigour that, in harmony with its basis in comprehensive accounting, there is always one equation which is implied logically by all the others. Solutions of these models are used to illustrate, with charts, ways in which whole economies evolve when shocked in various ways. Readers will be able to download all the models and explore their properties for themselves. A major conclusion is that economies require management via fiscal and monetary policy if full employment without inflation is to be achieved

Central banking in the modern world : alternative perspectives ( Book )
8 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 202 libraries worldwide
"Contributors to the volume carefully examine the procedures pursued by central banks, the monetary policy transmission mechanisms suggested by central bankers themselves, and the assumptions imbedded in the New Consensus. They propose alternative analyses that clearly demonstrate the limits of modern central banking and point to the possible instability of monetary economies. Heterodox and orthodox monetary macroeconomists alike will find this illuminating book of great interest."--Jacket

The stock-flow consistent approach : selected writings of Wynne Godley by Wynne Godley( Book )
13 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 81 libraries worldwide
Selected essays from the eminent economist, Wynne Godley, tracing the development of his work and illuminating the key theories and models that made his name. Essays focus not only on the stock-flow coherent approach, but also lay out Godley's views about the European Union and the stability of its monetary policy. This book is the intellectual legacy of Wynne Godley, the famous British economist who was the head of the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Cambridge for nearly 20 years, after having been deputy director of the Economic section at the UK Treasury. These selected writings are useful not only as a summary of the evolution of Godley's analysis, but also equip economists with new tools for the achievement of sustainable economic growth. Professor Godley's work always originated from puzzles in the real world economy, rather than from curiosities in economic models, and his work has retained its practicality; the stock-flow models have proved to be effective in predicting recent recessions. These essays present Godley's challenge to accepted wisdom in the field of macroeconomic modelling, which, in his opinion, did not reflect the economics that he had learned by working on practical matters for the Treasury in the 1960s. Godley developed post-Keynesian traditions and created models which fully integrate theory with the financial system and real demand and output
Wage-led growth : an equitable strategy for economic recovery by M Lavoie( Book )
11 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 80 libraries worldwide
This book examines the causes and consequences associated with the falling wage share and rising inequality in income distribution, relating to both aggregate demand and labour productivity. It presents new empirical and econometric evidence regarding the economic causes and potential impact of changing income distribution. The volume argues that distributional shifts in favour of capital and the rise in income inequality have reduced economic growth and increased economic instability
