Beethoven by Barry Cooper( Book )
25 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 1,016 libraries worldwide
"This new study of Beethoven and his music is written as a continuous, chronological narrative that sets the works against the musical and biographical background from which they emerged. Such an approach results in close integration of life and works, and is particularly appropriate in the case of Beethoven: firstly because composition was his central preoccupation ('I live entirely in my music', he once wrote), and secondly because recent research on his numerous musical sketches has produced a much clearer picture of his everyday compositional activity, leading to many new insights into the interaction between his life and music. Barry Cooper illuminates Beethoven's artistic achievements both by examining the origins of his works and by commentary on some of their most striking and original features." "Statements in earlier biographies have been scrutinized carefully and are accepted here only if supported by sound evidence. This thorough reassessment extends even to translations of individual German words, and many well-known but fictitious anecdotes have been eliminated. Conversely, numerous details discovered in recent years are for the first time incorporated into a general study of Beethoven - notably information from sketch studies and from a new edition of his correspondence. The many fresh conclusions will be of interest to both specialists and the musical public at large."--Jacket
Beethoven and the creative process by Barry Cooper( Book )
22 editions published between 1990 and 1998 in English and held by 909 libraries worldwide
Beethoven's folksong settings : chronology, sources, style by Barry Cooper( Book )
8 editions published between 1994 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 460 libraries worldwide
Beethoven composed far more folksong settings than any other type of work. Most are British songs, including Auld Lang Syne and The Miller of Dee, with texts by such authors as Burns, Byron, and Scott. Yet Beethoven's settings, commissioned by George Thomson of Edinburgh, have been neglected by performers and scholars alike, and nearly all accounts of them are both superficial and startlingly inaccurate
Beethoven : the first biography, 1827 by Johann Aloys Schlosser( Book )
7 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 414 libraries worldwide
Ludwig van Beethoven: Eine Biographie appeared in Prague a few months after the composer's death, thirteen years before the next biography of Beethoven would appear. Virtually nothing is known about the author, Johann Aloys Schlosser, except that he was born in the small town of Lann, in Bohemia, around 1790 and was a partner in a publishing firm in Prague from 1827-28, at which time he published this first brief biography of Beethoven. Many writers have pointed out the flaws in Schlosser's "biography." The purpose of the present edition is not to provide a clear and vivid picture of Beethoven's life, but to enable English-speaking readers to judge Schlosser's book for themselves rather than relying on secondhand criticisms, and to illuminate what was known and believed in Vienna and Prague in 1827 - not only about Beethoven but about his relationship to Haydn and Mozart, and to the music of Bach and Handel

The Dresden Staatskapelle has a very special tradition of performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It performed the then still highly controversial work for the first time in August 1838 under the baton of Johann Gottlieb Reissiger. Since 1900, the piece has been performed yearly on Palm Sunday, having been popularized by Richard Wagner in 1843
The Beethoven song companion by Paul Reid( Book )
2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 254 libraries worldwide
"This is the first full-length, published study of Beethoven's songs. All the composer's songs with piano are included, with full German texts and translations, together with comprehensive notes on the poetry and the music. The inclusion of unfinished songs gives a fascinating insight into Beethoven's compositional methods." "An introductory essay considers reasons for the relative neglect of the songs, the significance of Beethoven's choice of texts, his crucial role in the development of the German art-song and specific aspects such as choice of key. Throughout the book, poetic and musical texts are discussed in their historical context, and in the overall context of Beethoven's life and music." "This book will be of interest and value to singers and their accompanists, as well as to enthusiasts. The details on locations of autographs and the genesis of key works will also be an aid to further academic research."--Jacket

6 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 247 libraries worldwide
In Child Composers and Their Works: A Historical Survey, Barry Cooper examines over 100 composers born before 1900 who wrote substantial musical works before age 16. The book provides a general overview of the subject, examining the ways and identifying possible reasons these works have been marginalized in the general literature. Theannotated checklist presents a chronological listing of child composers born before 1900 and features a descriptive list of what they wrote, often including analytical commentary and offering occasional music examples for illustration. The list also includes a select catalog of works, suggestions for further reading, and recordings when available.
