This volume of nature and love poems was written by the "Keats of Kentucky," also known as the poet Madison Julius Cawein. Born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 23, 1865, Cawein was the son of a pharmacist who made patent medicines from herbs and who thereby acquainted his son with the local flora of Kentucky. Through his father's work, Cawain developed a great love for nature, which is thoroughly reflected in his poetry, along with his love of earlier English and European literature, mythology and classical allusion. Although he is largely forgotten as the genre of poetry in which he worked is outmoded, his work was once well respected. Every age has its great nature poet, and Cawein's poetry has certainly earned him a place amongst the great nature poets of his day
