Industrialization and agricultural surplus : a comparative study of economic development in Asia by Massoud Karshenas( Book )
10 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 227 libraries worldwide
What is the role of agricultural surplus in financing industrialization? What are the implications of different trade and industrial policies for agricultural development? What are the respective roles of allocative efficiency and production efficiency in the process of development? These are some of the questions addressed in this book. Dr Karshenas calls for a rethinking of some of the central hypotheses in economic development, arguing that productivity gains through better utilization of resources within sectors may be more crucial in the long run than efficient allocation of resources between sectors. He supports his argument by analysing the interaction between industry and agriculture in the development of China, India, Iran, Japan, and Taiwan, and shows that the emphasis in development literature on the role of agricultural surplus in financing industrialization has been misplaced
Social policy in the Middle East : economic, political, and gender dynamics ( Book )
10 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 198 libraries worldwide
"Countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), like other developing countries, are being transformed under the forces of globalization. The old economic models and strategies have been questioned and largely abandoned. New socio-economic relations are being forged, but no coherent vision and strategy of development is yet in place. Since the 1980s, and in the co-called post oil-boom era, most countries in the region have been facing a crisis of integration in the global economy. In the large and growing literature on economic reforming the MENA region, social policy has often taken a back seat. It is treated as a residual, or an afterthought to economic reform, in the shape of safety nets or safeguards to reintegrate the marginalized groups who are dislocated by the reform process. In contrast, this book shows that gender-sensitive social policy is likely to play a critical role both in the resolution of social conflicts during the present transition period, and in the formation and long-term functioning of the new economic systems that are taking shape. This volume brings 'social' back as a central theme in the analysis of economic reform in the MENA region."--Jacket

"In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, and in light of socio-economic and geopolitical challenges facing governments old and new, women's rights and empowerment have gained new urgency and relevance. Groups in power, or groups contesting for power, are more conservative than expected, and there are serious threats to roll back some of the gains women had achieved over the past 20-30 years on economic and social fronts. The global gender debate has neglected the economic dimension of women's empowerment and a great deal of debate and interest among researchers is needed to push the topics further. This timely book brings together leading regional researchers to offer original research linking gender equality with economic policy, reinforcing the agenda from a broad-based perspective."--Publisher summary
