This book is a collection of a set of lectures sponsored by the Bathsheva de Rothschild Seminars. It deals with different aspects of applied physics which are an outgrowth of fundamental research. The courses were given by experts engaged in their respective fields. These review articles are intended to fill a gap between the many research papers that are appearing today in pure science on one hand, and in applied science on the other hand. It is a bridge between these two. It aims at the specialist in applied physics, chemistry and engineering, working in these specialized fields, as well as at the graduate student, interested in solid solid state physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. While this book contains a range of different topics, there is an under lying logic in the choice of the subject material. The first three articles, by Drs. Giordmaine, Friesem and Porto, deal with modern applied optics, which arise to a large extent from the availability of coherent and powerful laser sources. Two articles deal with materials, in particular that of Dr. Chalmers on the theory and principle of solidification and that of Dr. Laudise on the techniques of crystal growth. The last three articles, by Drs. Matthias, Doyle and Prince, are concerned with the use of materials in fields of superconductivity, computer storage and semi conductor photovoltaic effects. Dr. Rose gives a definitive review on human and electronic vision, an out-growth of life-long activity in this field

The effect of the thermodynamic extensive parameters such as magnetic field H, electrical fields E and uniaxial continuous or laternative pressures P Sub c and P Sub a has been investigated on the isothermal rate of growth (+R) and dissolution ( -R) of some water soluble crystals in their water solution. The crystals investigated are antiferromagnetic I Cu(CH3COO2).H2O paramagnetic II CuSO4.5H2O and ferroelectric III Rochelle salt. The effect of H up to 150 KOe has been studied on I and II but is insignificant. The effects of E, P Sub c and P Sub a on (+R) and ( -R) of III are quite small, i.e. about 10% for E and P Sub c and 50% for P Sub a. In the case of E it is concluded that the magnitude and the sign of the effect, i.e. increase in ( -R) and decrease in (+R) can be calculated thermodynamically by using an analogue equation of the Clausius-Clapeyron relation which includes the electrical polarization and mechanical elastic strain terms to the free energy equation. Growth of Barium Ferrite for Magnetic Optical Devices ( Book )

Single crystals of BaFe12O19 have been grown using the flux method. The initial weight composition from which the crystals were grown consists of 64.3 BaCO3, 15.5 B2O3, 34.5 Fe2O3 and 1 V2O3. This composition has been varied to add PbO instead of BaO and to increase or decrease the amount of V2O3, in order to change the fluidity of the melt and improve the grown crystals. Radiation Effects on Quartz Crystals and Oscillators, and Growth of Doped Quartz Crystals ( Book )
2 editions published between 1970 and 1972 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Quartz crystals were grown by the hydrothermal method in NaOH solutions. Rates of growth in the AT and Z directions were measured for undoped and doped quartz (Mg(2+), Ga(3+), V(5+)), using various temperature gradients. All dopants, except Mg(2+), gave rates of growth lower than undoped quartz. Oscillators made of various synthetic and natural Brazilian crystals were irradiated with 5 MeV electrons and effects of irradiation on frequency and on Q-values were measured over the temperature range 77-550 degrees K. Frequency changes and reductions in Q appeared at various temperature ranges. For a High-Q SARP crystal (5 MHz in 5th harmonic) the frequency change by irradiation with about 1,000,000 rads reached about 700 Hz, and appeared mainly below 200 degrees K, just where the strongest thermoluminescence appeared. With the same crystal Q-values at a few temperature ranges were found to be sensitive to irradiation, and in these ranges the crystal even ceased oscillating after irradiation. Most effects of irradiation were canceled by heating to about 500 degrees K. Other crystals exhibited similar radiation effects. (Author)
