An uncertain glory : India and its contradictions by Jean Drèze( Book )
21 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 621 libraries worldwide
When India became independent in 1947 after two centuries of colonial rule, it immediately adopted a firmly democratic political system, with multiple parties, freedom of speech, and extensive political rights. Maintaining rapid as well as environmentally sustainable growth remains an important and achievable goal for India. Two of India's leading economists argue that the country's main problems lie in the lack of attention paid to the essential needs of the people, especially of the poor, and often of women. In the long run, even the feasibility of high economic growth is threatened by the underdevelopment of social and physical infrastructure and the neglect of human capabilities
India, economic development and social opportunity by Jean Drèze( Book )
39 editions published between 1995 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 475 libraries worldwide
"This book presents an analysis of endemic deprivation in India, and of the role of public action in addressing that problem. The analysis is based on a broad view of economic development, focusing on human well-being and social opportunity rather than on the standard indicators of economic growth." "India's success in reducing endemic deprivation since Independence has been quite limited. Recent diagnoses of this failure of policy have concentrated on the counterproductive role of government regulation, and on the need for economic incentives to accelerate the growth of the economy. This book argues that an assessment of India's failure to eliminate basic deprivations has to go beyond this limited focus, and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate public involvement in the promotion of basic education, health care, social security, and related entitlements. Even the fostering of fast and participatory economic growth requires some basic social change, which is not addressed by liberalization and economic incentives alone. The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. The book considers the scope for public action to address these earlier biases and achieve a transformation of policy priorities."--Jacket
The political economy of hunger : selected essays ( Book )
19 editions published between 1994 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 372 libraries worldwide
"The Political Economy of Hunger is the classic analysis of an extraordinary paradox: in a world of food surpluses and satiety, hunger kills millions more people each year than wars or political repression. Now this abridged version, edited by Athar Hussain, puts the most influential essays from the three-volume work within the reach of concerned citizens." "Ranging from Africa to South Asia to China, and written by an international array of authorities, the essays included in this abridgement give the best available analysis of the causes of worldwide hunger and deprivation, and the best hope for effective aid policies in the future."--Jacket

Policy reform, shadow prices and market prices by Jean Drèze( Book )
13 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 32 libraries worldwide
How should possible policy reforms and projects be assessed when prices give misleading signals? Revenues and costs at market prices then give distorted measrres of social gains and losses and our appraisal should use social opportunity costs, or correctly defined, shadow prices. We show how shadow prices may be integrated into an analysis of tax and price reform, demonstrate the critical dependence of these prices on government policy, and analyze their relations with market prices. A conceptual framework for applied analysis is provided plus a detailed theoretical account of policy in a model with some fixed prices, rationing, and taxation
