Papers of the Boston merchant and shipping firm Bryant & Sturgis, primarily business correspondence (1812-20, 1856-57) with other merchants and shipmasters around the world, involved in the trade of lumber, opium, and tea, among many other goods and commodities. Also, volumes of ships' accounts (1815-43), receipt books (1811-41), and a volume of accounts (1833-39) kept by William Sturgis for minor Wendell T. Davis. Other papers (1829-32) of Sturgis concern the construction of J.P. Cushing's house in Boston, designed by Asher Benjamin

Papers of the related Sturgis and Hooper families, primarily correspondence of Transcendentalist poet Ellen (Sturgis) Hooper with family members. Included are letters written by Ellen, many from Miss Cushing's boarding school in Hingham, Mass. beginning in 1822, to her parents William and Elizabeth (Davis) Sturgis and her aunt Ellen (Davis) Goodwin; correspondence with her grandfather John Davis; and eight letters from her brother William Watson Sturgis. After her marriage in 1837, primary correspondents are her sisters Anne, Caroline, and Susan; her husband Robert W. Hooper; her sister-in-law Eunice Hooper; her daughter Ellen; and Emma P. Forbes. Letters discuss family matters, including her children Ellen, Edward, and Marian ("Clover"); her poetry and her association with Transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson; and the trip she took to Savannah, Ga. and Charleston, S.C. for her health in 1848. Many letters, particularly Caroline (Sturgis) Tappan's, include sketches, and many are undated. Also included are single undated letters to Ellen from Sarah Freeman Clarke (with a sketch) and Sarah Alden Ripley; manuscript poetry by Ellen and others; and undated diary pages (20 pp.) from a trip she took to Virginia with her impressions of some of the slaves she met
