The collection contains correspondence of Robert W. Hooper, 1833-1878, with his parents John and Eunice Hooper; his brothers Samuel, Nathaniel, and Francis; his sisters Eunice and Mary; his daughters Ellen and Clover; and other family members. Included are letters written during his medical studies in Paris and travels in Europe, 1833-1835; one letter from Savannah describing a slave auction, 5 Apr. 1848; letters from his brother Sam on a trip to Europe, 1853-1854; papers related to his work as a doctor after the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1863; letters from Daniel Webster, one of his patients; and a few undated letters from his mother to his father on a trip west. The collection also contains many letters from Fanny (Chapin) Hooper to Lilian Freeman Clarke, 1860-1880, about family and friends, her engagement and marriage to Edward W. Hooper, news of the Civil War, and other matters. (Fanny's aunt Susan Fisher married Lilian's uncle Abraham Clarke.)
