The southern land, known by Gabriel de Foigny( Book )
2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 192 libraries worldwide
Foigny's La Terre Australe connue, published in 1676, is a fantastically engaging and playful example of the "imaginary voyage" genre. It is also a seventeenth-century work with some curiously modern resonances. Written in the tradition of More's Utopia, and serving itself as a forerunner to Swift's Gulliver's Travels, The Southern Land, Known offered its readers a radical criticism of then prevailing ideologies in the guise of a lively and provocative novel. Knowledge of the vast continent of Australia was, in Foigny's day, still mingled with legends, hearsay, and travelers' tales. It is in this context that the "unknown Southern Land" becomes known to the hero of this short, action-packed, and highly structured story

Mapping the Renaissance world : the geographical imagination in the age of discovery by Frank Lestringant( Book )
6 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 15 libraries worldwide
This book focuses on the work of the great sixteenth-century traveller and map-maker, Andre Thevet. Accused of blasphemous audacity and mocked for his encyclopaedic aims, the figure of Thevet is a wonderful example of the way knowledge of the world was transformed during the decline of the Renaissance. Exploring the interrelations between representation and power in the age of discovery, Mapping the Renaissance World will be of interest to students and researchers in early modern history, literature and anthropology
The semiotics of human evolution by David Fausett( Book )

Amnioticon histoire de l'utopie "australe by David Fausett( Book )
5 editions published between 1988 and 1989 in French and Undetermined and held by 8 libraries worldwide
THIS THESIS BRINGS TOGETHER THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE EUROPEAN DISCOVERY OF THE "AUSTRAL" REGIONS ( THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE IN GENERAL AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE LAST UNKNOWN REGIONS OF AUSTRALASIA AND THE SOUTH PACIFIC), AND THE LITERARY CRITICISM OF THE "CLASSICAL" UTOPIAS BASED ON THIS PROBLEMATICAL HISTORY, FROM CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY UNTIL THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. THE MEANING TO BE DRAWN FROM THIS TEMPORARY ALIGNMENT OF LITERARY AND GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORY ON THE SAME PROBLEMATIC IS ANALYSED AS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURE-HISTORICAL "INVOLUTION" PRODUCED IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT, AS A RUPTURE WITH CULTURAL ORGANICITY IN GENERAL AND, AS LITERARY-HISTORICAL SIDE-EFFECT, A RUPTURE WITH THE TRADITION OF UTOPIAN WRITING INVESTING THE THEME OF GEOGRAPHICAL PROBLEMICITY. THE "AUSTRAL" ASPECT OF CLASSICAL UTOPIAN THEMATICS IS THUS EXAMINED IN TERMS OF ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO THE HISTORY OF IDEAS: AS EMBLEMATIC OF THE PLAY OF RELATIONS OF SOCIAL SPACE, BY WAY OF A METAPHORICAL, SATIRICAL ASSOCIATION OF THE HEMISPHERICAL AND SEXUAL MODALITIES OF STRUCTURING BINARITY; WHICH THE THESIS FORMALIZES AS AN "INTER-COLLECTIVE EROTICS". THIS PERSPECTIVE CAN BE SEEN TO HAVE THEORIZED ( IN A PRE-SCIENTIFIC WAY ) THE ESSENTIAL DETERMINING RELATION BETWEEN THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF WESTERN EXPANSION AND, AT THE LIMIT, OF HUMAN EVOLUTION ITSELF: AS PHENOMENA ARISINQ OUT OF THE INTER-COLLECTIVE TERRITORIAL RELATION
