10 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 406 libraries worldwide
"Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) is the only Arab writer to have been awarded the Nobel prize for literature. The author of thirty-five novels, fifteen collections of short stories, twenty-five film screenplays, numerous critical works, and in his later years over five hundred short fictions based on his dreams (partly published as The Dreams and Dreams of Departure by the AUC Press in 2004 and 2007), he has been hugely influential on several generations of Arab writers, and his books are now read in more than forty languages around the world." "In this first biography of Naguib Mahfouz in English, Rasheed El-Enany looks at the life of the man and the work of the writer, and assesses the oeuvre and legacy of a towering figure in the Egyptian and Arab literary world who was able to reach far beyond his own linguistic and cultural boundaries to an admiring readership across the globe."--Jacket

Tales of encounter : three Egyptian novellas by Yūsuf Idrīs( Book )
2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 107 libraries worldwide
The first two novellas in this volume, Madam Vienna and The Secret of His Power, come from the peak period in Idris' career, the late 1950s and early 1960s, while New York 80 belongs to his late period, the 1980s. They all deal with a seminal theme in Arabic fiction: the East-West encounter, often treated allegorically by Arab writers through a love story between an Arab man and a Western woman who stand for their respective cultures

Najīb Maḥfūẓ and his works
Respected sir by Najīb Maḥfūẓ( Book )
10 editions published between 1975 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 20 libraries worldwide
With this portrait of a misanthropic civil servant, the Egyptian Nobel laureate devises a cunning send-up of egregious ambition, stodgy bureaucracy and cloying piety. Mahfouz's overblown language mirrors the grandiose aspirations of his protagonist Othman Bayyumi, a common archives clerk who schemes for a lofty appointment as Director General, expounding that "a government position is a brick in the edifice of the state, and the state is an exhalation of the spirit of God, incarnate on earth." As Egypt experiences the birth pangs of nationalism, Othman remains an apolitical, selfish loner wallowing in his self-imposed misery, who fawns over his superiors, works like a dervish and squirrels away his money, his only physical pleasures the visits he pays religiously to a prostitute, which "were usually followed by a wholehearted plea for forgiveness and a prolonged resort to prayer and worship."45 Envisioning marriage as a means to forge social connections that will launch him to glory, he viciously turns down prospective brides; because no one is good enough for him, he ends up in his later years with two wives, one a opium-addict aging prostitute, the other a young woman who uses him as he sought to use others. -- from (April 26, 2011)
