Trapped under the sea : one engineering marvel, five men, and a disaster ten miles into the darkness by Neil Swidey( file )
3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 89 libraries worldwide
The harrowing story of five men who were sent into a dark, airless, miles-long tunnel, hundreds of feet below the ocean, to do a nearly impossible job--with deadly results. In the 1990s, Boston built a sophisticated waste treatment plant on Deer Island that was poised to show the country how to rebound from environmental ruin. The state had been dumping barely treated sewage into the water for so long that Boston had America's filthiest harbor, with a layer of "black mayonnaise" coating the seafloor. Fisheries collapsed, wildlife fled, and locals referred to floating tampon applicators as "beach whistles." But before the dumping could stop, a team of divers had to make a perilous journey to the end of a 10-mile tunnel--devoid of light and air--to complete the construction. Five went in, but not all of them came out

General Cypher Raige of the United Ranger Corps is only the latest in a long line of heroes. For a thousand years, ever since the globe was engulfed by environmental apocalypse, the Raiges have been instrumental in humanity's survival. They led the way as the survivors abandoned Earth, settled a hospitable planet called Nova Prime, withstood an onslaught from a mysterious alien force, and carved out a new home in the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Now Cypher has returned to his family after an extended tour of duty. For his thirteen-year-old son, Kitai, tagging along with his famous father is the adventure of a lifetime--and a chance to salvage their relationship. But when an asteroid collides with their craft, they make a crash landing that leaves Cypher seriously--perhaps fatally--wounded. Kitai Raige has always wanted to prove that he has what it takes to live up to his illustrious name. Now, all too soon, he gets his chance. With his father's life on the line, Kitai must venture out into the strange, hostile terrain of a new world that seems eerily familiar: Earth
Etruscan places by D. H Lawrence( Book )
5 editions published between 1933 and 1997 in German and English and held by 31 libraries worldwide
The Etruscan civilisation, which flourished from the 8th until the 5th century BC in what is now Tuscany, is one of the most fascinating and mysterious in history. An uninhibited, elemental people, the Etruscans enthralled D.H. Lawrence, who craved their 'old wisdom', the secret of their vivacity and love of life. To him they represented the antithesis of everything he despised in the modern world, perhaps because their spontaneity and naturalness struck a chord with his own quest for personal and artistic freedom - so often censured or repressed. Lawrence approaches the enigmatic Etruscans as

Studies in classic American literature by D. H Lawrence( Book )
7 editions published between 1923 and 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 10 libraries worldwide
This book first published in 1923, provides a cross-section of Lawrence's writing on American literature from the previous six years, including landmark essays on Benjamin Franklin, Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Richard Dana, Herman Melville and Walt Whitman. Eight of the essays were first published in the English Review 1918-19, but Lawrence continued to work on his material, with the aim of producing a full-length book; at various times fifteen separate items belonged to it, all of them revised on different occasions, some of them four or five times, and often corrected with the errors of their predecessors preserved. This volume offers the final 1923 version of the text in a newly corrected and uncensored form; it contains the complete surviving 1918-19 text of the essays of the English Review period, including two previously unpublished essay versions; it offers five previously unpublished essays from 1919, as well as a host of other materials (for example, four different versions of Lawrence's pioneering essay on Whitman are included)

The virgin and the gipsy and other stories by D. H Lawrence( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
"The stories in this volume are from the last four years of D.H. Lawrence's writing life. Two powerful novellas dominate the collection: The Virgin and the Gipsy and The Escaped Cock (also known as The Man Who Died). Both of these deal with themes of escape and sexual awakening, but in very different contexts. In the first, a young woman from a restrictive English rectory learns about further dimensions to life through her contact with a gipsy; in the second, an unnamed resurrected man - Lawrence's vision of Christ - escapes from the tomb and likewise has a first sexual experience. Related themes are explored by four short stories and three fragments. This edition restores Lawrence's latest forms of the texts, before the changes introduced by censorship, mistakes in transmission and various other forms of interference, with variants recorded. The introduction traces the history of the stories, while the notes offer help with allusions, contexts and other points of potential difficulty or interest."--Jacket
Late essays and articles by D. H Lawrence( Book )
1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
"In his last years D.H. Lawrence often wrote for newspapers; he needed the money, and clearly enjoyed the work. He also wrote several substantial essays during the same period. This meticulously edited collection brings together major essays such as Pornography and Obscenity and Lawrence's spirited Introduction to the volume of his paintings; a group of autobiographical pieces, two of which are published here for the first time; and the articles Lawrence wrote at the invitation of newspaper and magazine editors. There are thirty-nine items in total, thirty-five of them deriving from original manuscripts; all were written between 1926 and Lawrence's death in March 1930. They are ordered chronologically according to the date of composition; each is preceded by an account of the circumstances in which it came to be published. The volume is introduced by a substantial survey of Lawrence's career as a writer responding directly to public interests and concerns."--Jacket
