Unruly places : lost spaces, secret cities, and other inscrutable geographies by Alastair Bonnett( Book )
11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 951 libraries worldwide
"The real-life answers to Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, Unruly Places explores the most extraordinary, off-grid, offbeat places on the planet. Alastair Bonnett's tour of the planet's most unlikely micro-nations, moving villages, secret cities, and no man's lands shows us the modern world from surprising new vantage points, bound to inspire urban explorers, off-the-beaten-trail wanderers, and armchair travelers. He connects what we see on maps to what's happening in the world by looking at the places that are hardest to pin down: inaccessible zones, improvised settlements, multiple cities sharing the same space. Consider Sealand, an abandoned gun platform off the English coast that a British citizen claimed as his own sovereign nation, issuing passports and making his wife a princess. Or Baarle, a patchwork city of Dutch and Flemish enclaves where crossing the street can involve traversing national borders. Or Sandy Island, which appeared on maps well into 2012 despite the fact it never existed. Illustrated with original maps and drawings, Unruly Places gives readers a new way of understanding the places we occupy. "--

Off the map : lost spaces, invisible cities, forgotten islands, feral places, and what they tell us about the world by Alastair Bonnett( Book )
25 editions published between 2014 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 303 libraries worldwide
"In a world of Google Earth where we think that the world is fully mapped out, every discovery and adventure made, Off the Map is a journey through the remaining hidden geographies - from disappearing island to gutterspaces, invisible cities and floating landmasses - and is a stunning testament to how mysterious the world remains today. In the great tradition of pyscho-geography - the history of places and what they tell us about ourselves - Off the Map follows Iain Sinclair, Will Self, Robert Macfarlane and Judith Schalansky s Atlas of Remote Islands to give the real-life answer to Italo Calvino s Invisible Cities by weaving together what we see on maps to what the world is really like. It is celebration of both our love of places and the desire to imagine new places. Whether it is Sealand, an abandoned gun platform off the English coast that a British citizen claimed as his own sovereign nation, making his wife his princess, or Baarle, a patchwork of Dutch and Flemish enclaves where crossing the road can involve traversing multiple national borders; or moving villages, unclaimed deserts, secret cities or underground labyrinths, fully illustrated with original maps and drawing Off the Map shows the modern world from surprising new vantage points that will inspire urban explorers, and armchair travellers alike to consider a new way of understanding the world we live in" --Publisher description

Left in the past : radicalism and the politics of nostalgia by Alastair Bonnett( Book )
15 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 200 libraries worldwide
This book looks at the role nostalgia plays in the radical imagination to offer a new guide to the history and politics of the left. In "Left in the Past", Bonnett re-assesses the place of nostalgia within radical politics and, in doing so, provides a new introduction to the history and politics of the left. Bonnett argues that nostalgia has been a chronic, but repressed, aspect of the socialist imagination. "Left in the Past" is premised on the idea that, in our 'post-socialist era', the relationship between radicalism and a sense of loss, and the ambivalent position of socialism in and against modernity, can be viewed with greater clarity. In Section One of the book, Bonnett shows the centrality and repression of nostalgia in both 19th-century radicalism and anti-colonial radicalism. In Section Two, he explores the consequences of this inheritance by way of 20th century and contemporary studies of revolutionary intellectuals and intellectual culture. Bonnett's unique approach in how to understand the left in an age of post-socialism will make book a needed resource for anyone interested in the history and politics of the left and radicalism

White identities : historical and international perspectives by Alastair Bonnett( Book )
10 editions published between 1999 and 2014 in English and held by 128 libraries worldwide
"Once studies of race and ethnicity were dominated by discussion of non-western and exotic identities. However, recent years have seen the development of a debate on the meaning and nature of a supposedly very 'normal' or 'ordinary' identity - whiteness." "White Identities provides an historical and international intervention in this debate, drawing together new insights and original research into an accessible but challenging introduction to the topic. The author argues that 'White Studies', as it is presently conceived, is an American project, reflecting American interpretations of race and history. However, the book shows that the impact of white identities is global in scope and significance. Thus, only a thorough historical and international perspective on whiteness can provide a proper introduction to the subject, an introduction that has relevance to students worldwide."--Jacket
