Nachdem Altmeister Robert Altman in das Los Angeles der Gegenwart ("Short Cuts") und in die Modewelt von Paris ("Pret-a-Porter") getaucht war, dringt er diesmal ins Kansas City des Jahres 1934: Die Telegrafistin Blondie O'Hara bringt die drogensüchtige Carolyn Stilton, die Frau eines einflussreichen Politikers und Beraters von Präsident Roosevelt, in ihre Gewalt. Blondie hofft, dadurch den Politiker dazu zu bewegen, sich für ihren Ehemann Johnny einzusetzten. Johnny schlägt sich als kleiner Ganove durchs Leben und hat einen Coup gelandet, von dem er besser die Finger gelassen hätte. Denn dadurch geriet er in die Fänge des Unterweltbosses Seldom Seen, der ihn nun möglicherweise töten wird... Eine Mischung aus Gangster- und Jazzfilm, die nur wenigen die Gemeinsamkeiten von kreativem Filmemachen und der kreativen Jazzmusik vermitteln können. Wenn man weiß, dass Altman hier seine Kindheitserinnerungen verarbeitet hat, ist es verständlicher, dass die Geschichte offensichtlich lediglich als Mittel zum Zweck dient. Denn im Mittelpunkt stehen die Wiederbelebung der 30er Jahre mit der verrauchten Atmosphäre zwischen faszinierendem Jazz und skrupellosem Gangstertum. Mit einer erlesenen Schar hochkarätiger Schauspieler und Jazzmusiker schuf der Regisseur einen Film, der auf den ungeschulten Betrachter eher wie die schmucke Bebilderung eines hörenswerten Soundtracks wirkt
