Encountering the mystery : understanding Orthodox Christianity today by Bartholomew( Book )
11 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 577 libraries worldwide
As Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew is the symbol of unity for the self-governing national and ethnic Orthodox Christian churches throughout the world. He is well known for his commitment to protecting the environment, and for opening communications with other Christians as well as with Muslims and other religious groups. His efforts for raising environmental awareness globally have earned him the title "Green Patriarch." Written with personal warmth and great erudition, Encountering the Mystery illuminates the rich culture and soul of Orthodox Christianity. Bartholomew traces the roots of Orthodox Christianity to its founding two thousand years ago, explores its spirituality and doctrine, and explains its liturgy and art. More especially, in a unique and unprecedented way, he relates Orthodox Christianity to contemporary issues, such as freedom and human rights, social justice and globalization, as well as nationalism and war. With a recent rebirth of Orthodox Christian churches (particularly in the former Soviet Union and elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe), there has been great interest in understanding this important branch of Christianity with its close ties to the traditions of the early Church. As USA Today recently reported, Orthodox Christian churches throughout the country are drawing converts attracted by the beauty of its liturgy and inspired by its enduring theology. But for the general seeker, whatever their background, Encountering the Mystery is a rich spiritual source that draws upon the wisdom of millennia

On earth as in heaven : ecological vision and initiatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew by Bartholomew( Book )
9 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 129 libraries worldwide
"No worldwide Church leader has been as internationally recognized for his dynamic leadership and initiatives in addressing the theological, ethical, and practical imperative in relation to the critical environmental issues of our time as His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Patriarch Bartholomew has long placed the environment at the head of his Church's agenda by developing ecological programs, chairing Pan-Orthodox gatherings and international symposia, and organizing environmental seminars for more than a decade. This book demonstrates just why His All Holiness has been dubbed the "Green Patriarch" by Al Gore and the media. This third and final volume of the spiritual leader's selected writings showcases his statements on environmental degradation, global warming, and climate change. It contains numerous speeches and interviews in various circumstances, including ecological symposia, academic seminars, and regional and international events, over the first twenty years of his ministry. The book also encompasses a selection of pastoral letters and exhortations--ecclesiastical, ecumenical, and academic--by His All Holiness for occasions such as Easter and Christmas, honorary doctorates, and academic awards."--Publisher's abstract
Sacred seed ( Book )
2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 122 libraries worldwide
Inspired by physicist and environmental leader Dr. Vandana Shiva, this collection of essays draw on the wisdom of ancient and modern traditions to remind readers of the profound sacredness of the seedhow in its purity, it is the source and renewal of all of life. For centuries the planting of the seed in the earth not only nourished humanity, but also symbolized the mystery of life and the journey of the soul. Yet, modern culture has begun to lose an appreciation of the primal meaning of the seed. Tenderly created from original writings of mystics, shamans, monastics, and priests, and featuring vibrant photos, this book bears witness that the Earth is alive, and establishes that only by working together with the earthwith its wonder and mysterycan we help in its healing and regeneration and once again bring meaning back into the world. The book includes contributions from His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Swami Veda Bharati, Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Chief Tamale Bwoya, Blu Greenberg, and others

Documentary film that shows that the need for a universal ecological consciousness is now essential to the planet's survival. With this in mind, the Religion, Science and the Environment symposium, attended by the Ecumenical Patriarch and leading theologians, environmentalists and scientists, sailed the Adriatic Sea and focused on how humanity can be inspired towards an ecological ethos. The six countries of the Adriatic range from one of the wealthiest to some of the poorest in Europe; and their problems range from those of an advanced industrial economy to those in transition and recovery from recent wars. The voyage included visits to toxic hot spots as well as successful projects to protect the environment. The symposium concluded in Venice where the Patriarch and Pope John Paul II came together to sign the Venice Declaration, in which they laid the foundation for developing a joint environmental ethos

La réforme liturgique du métropolite Cyprien de Kiev : l'introduction du typikon sabaïte dans l'office divin by J Getcha( Book )
2 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 15 libraries worldwide

"I know a man in Christ" : Elder Sophrony, the Hesychast and theologian by Hierotheos Vlachos( Book )
1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 6 libraries worldwide
Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos wrote this book about Elder Sophrony as an expression of gratitude for his long association (17 years) with the Elder and "to share with readers the spiritual wealth that I unworthily received". The first part of the book is a spiritual portrait of Elder Sophrony. After a brief survey of his theology, the author examines the Elder's writings in the light of the experience of saints of the Church, particularly St Paul, St Symeon the New Theologian and St Gregory Palamas, thus placing his teaching in a wider context. There is a careful analysis of the Elder's correspondence with David Balfour, which reveals "many subtle details of the spiritual life" but also how "a genuine spiritual father guides those entrusted to him". The second part of the book records what the author learnt and experienced during visits to the Monastery of St John the Baptist in meetings and informal conversations with the Elder and as a concelebrant at the Divine Liturgy. Over the years he carefully recorded the Elder's words and amassed an archive of notes that he publishes here. The subjects covered reflect both Father Sophrony's and the author's personal and pastoral concerns and include prayer (particularly the Jesus Prayer); monasticism and obedience; priesthood and the temptations it brings; giving spiritual guidance; the problems facing those who become Orthodox; and family life. The discussions also shed light on theological issues close to the Elder's heart. The book shows us a "great hesychast and theologian, but also a wise, discerning and prophetic spiritual father" and brings us closer to the man in Christ.--Publisher
