Language, custom, and nation in the 1790s : Locke, Tooke, Wordsworth, Edgeworth by Susan Manly( Book )
4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 185 libraries worldwide
"Language, Custom and Nation in the 1790s shows for the first time how the radical 'Jacobin' poets, and their ideas of a 'revolutionary' poetry, were impelled - even 'invented' - by the seventeenth-century English philosopher John Locke. For too long the revolutionary Romanticism and poetic experiments of the 1790s have been understood as responses to the American and French revolutions or attributed to the intellectual influence of Rousseau." "Susan Manly counters these assumptions, by tracing threads of influence from Locke's ideas of 'arbitrary' language and tyranny, through Tooke's attacks on terms such as 'majesty' and 'law', to the supposedly 'real language' of Wordsworthian Romanticism. She breaks new ground in establishing Maria Edgeworth's place in Locke's anti-authoritarian tradition, contending that Edgeworth's work, produced in the shadow of the United Irishmen uprising, revives the politicisation of the idea of common language displaced in Wordsworth's neutralizing of Locke's radical impulse in the preface to Lyrical Ballads. Manly's original and engaging book will appeal to scholars of 1790s radicalism, eighteenth-century linguistic theory, women's writing and the relations between Britain and Ireland."--Jacket

A novel of manners and conversation in the patrician social mielieu of England and London in the 1820's and 1803's. It begins as a novel of courtship, destined to end with the happy betrothal of its heroine, the orphaned Helen Stanley, but it soon turns into the story of Helen's friend Lady Cecilia Clarendon, and the crumbling of her marriage as her beguiling and harmless lies, not told in malice, becomes self-destructive to those whom she loves

Practical education by Maria Edgeworth( Book )

The scientist Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817), educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and Oxford, was a Member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, where he exchanged ideas with other scientists, including James Watt, and was known for his significant mechanical inventions. However, Edgeworth's real interest was education: in this 1788 two-volume work, written with his daughter, the poet Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), he draws on his own experience of raising twenty children (by his four wives), from which the work derives its authority
