Angleterre, début 20e siècle. Swampsea est une petite bourgade anglaise perdue au milieu des marécages, qui voit la modernité arriver jusque chez elle, sous la forme du chemin de fer. Cette modernisation s'accompagne d'une grande opération de drainage des marais, ces fameux marais habités par "Ceux du passé", créatures étranges, fantômes divers et autres démons. Briony, 17 ans, douée de seconde vue, sait que le monde des esprits redoute le drainage. Dans cette région reculée, la révolution industrielle n'a pas encore effacé les superstitions, les pendaisons des sorcières et les créatures des marais. Pour punir les villageois, le Seigneur des marécages leur a envoyé une toux mortelle. Il menace bientôt Rose, la sœur jumelle de Briony, si cette dernière ne parvient pas à arrêter les travaux. Déjà traumatisée parce qu'elle se croit une sorcière, à l'origine du handicap mental de Rose, la jeune fille se met à agir de manière désespérée. Le jeune et libre Eldric, un Londonien, est le seul à s'intéresser au malaise de Briony. [SDM]
