Sound insulation of single plates, steel 1mm and 2mm, chipboard 12mm and 19.5mm, of geometry (Lx, Ly) = (1, 2) (m), different combinations of them, and some samples of real doors have been investigated systematically under laboratory conditions. A theoretical procedure for evaluating the sound reduction index has been modelled. The results given by the model can fit the measured data quite well. For single plate cases the measurements aim at checking out the best formulae for evaluating the sound reduction index. For frequencies above 100 Hz to very close to the critical frequency Sewell's formula fits the data very well. Above the critical frequency Sharp's formula, or revised Cremer's, works quite well. And, if a correction term is added to Sewell's formula the revised Sewell formula can go onto the critical frequency with a good accuracy. Below about 100 Hz Sewell's formula is not suitable because the term inside the logarithmic function (the geometric factor) becomes negative. Due to the limit of measurement the cases below 100 Hz have not been studied. The rest of the measurements are for investigations how interactions between adjacent layers affect the values of sound reduction index and then a theoretical model can be formed. In general, there are two different interactions, shear interactions, which will affect the equivalent bending stiffness, or in turn, the critical frequency, and the elastic interactions in the direction of the normal, which transmit vibrations. Shear interactions can be formulated by a single variable function of frequency, but the parameters in the function will be determined in the way that is based on the measurements and, unfortunately, it is case sensitive. The elastic interactions can be modelled by the double wall model, or its generalisation for multi-leaf cases. For some combinations of plates, resonance can affect the results, sometimes dominantly. But, for cases of real doors, resonance will at most have a little effect, because real doors have very tight structures. The (equivalent) mounting stiffness can not be neglected in all cases and the resonance caused by it and the total mass of the structure will have a big effect on the results. All these considerations form a theoretical procedure, which can produce the values of TL fitting the measure data quite well. The concept of the neutral surface has been discussed and it does not hold in general cases
