Development finance in the global economy : the road ahead by Tony Addison( Book )
8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 208 libraries worldwide
For much of the last 30 years the global economy has not worked well for most poor countries or for most poor people. But there are now grounds for optimism. Presently, global liquidity is ample, pushing investors into parts of the world they previously avoided, and private investment is rising. A new and more positive chapter has begun in Africa's debt story and aid flows have started to rise again after years of stagnation. Yet progress remains tentative. Global liquidity and private investment could contract and the recent growth in aid is not enough. Very poor countries still receive too little private capital. This book explores how international finance can serve the needs of poor countries and poor people. Containing contributions from a wide range of economists and political scientists, including those who have been at the centre of the international policy debate, this volume is an essential companion for all scholars and policymakers in this important area

Security and development ( Book )
6 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 114 libraries worldwide
This book tackles some of the main security challenges facing the international development community today. Containing contributions by leading experts, including some who have been at the center of the international policy debate, it goes further by putting forward suggestions and recommendations as to how best deal with these threats as well as challenges in this crucial area. The overall nexus between security and development poses some formidable questions about the multiple forms of violence which afflict the international community: Why are some places peaceful while others are violent? Is poverty the main cause of civil conflict? What is the role of foreign aid in the whole process of rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery following conflict?

4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 22 libraries worldwide
"We investigate domestic private investment behaviour in a panel of 24 low-income and middle-income countries spanning a period of 1981-2000. The paper rigorously addresses (i) the cross-country heterogeneity in private investment behaviour, and (ii) endogeneity. Indicators of financial sector development and other standard macroeconomic determinants of private investment appear significant in explaining private investment behaviour in out sample; however, the estimated parameters and adjustment dynamics exhibit important cross-country differences. The empirical findings of the paper have important implications namely that first, cross-country heterogeneity needs to be addressed while modelling the private investment behaviour, and second, at the policy level, the country-specific approach appears potentially more effective than the one-size-fits-all approach for boosting private investment" -- Abstract

Multicriteria portfolio management by Panos Xidonas( file )
3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 21 libraries worldwide
The disastrous impact of the recent worldwide financial crisis in the global economy has shown how vulnerable international markets are. The insufficiency of our models and tools to effectively intercept the overwhelming consequences of the decline has to be the starting point for re-designing and re-engineering existing portfolio management methods and tools. Under this rationale, three strong necessities become apparent: a) The enhancement of current PM processes and ontologies, b) The improvement of the effectiveness of contemporary portfolio engineering models, and c) The augmentation of the operational transparency and compliance within the PM practice. The methods, tools, and analytics that are presented in this book directly deal with the above objectives and assist in the enhancement of current state-of-the-art by introducing innovative and integrated investment business analytics and frameworks, launching new powerful and robust decision support algorithmic tools and mechanisms, and exploiting multiple risk metrics and standardized risk management procedures, within a fertile coalition. The target audience of this book includes a diversified group of readers, such as portfolio managers, financial managers, economists, bankers, as well as operations researchers and management scientists. Moreover, this monograph can also be used as a textbook for graduate courses in portfolio theory, investment analysis and fund management
Financial sector structure and financial crisis burden : a model based on the Russian default of 1998 by George Mavrotas( Book )
4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 20 libraries worldwide
"We consider an overlapping generations model with two production factors and two types of agents in the presence of financial intermediation and its application to the Russian default of August 1998. The paper focuses on the analysis of the consequences of a sudden negative repayments shock on financial intermediation capacity and consequently on the economy as a whole. The model exhibits a 'chain reaction" property, when a single macroeconomic shock can lead to the exhaustion of credit resources and to the subsequent collapse of the whole banking system. To maintain the capability of the system to recover, regulatory intervention is needed even in the presence of the state guarantees on agents' deposits in the banks (workout incentives). We compare the results for an intermediated economy with those derived under the assumption of a market economy, and draw some broad conclusions on the consequences of the crises, which are contingent on the financial sector structure. -- Abstract
