In this dissertation, I focus on how Clorinda Matto de Turner articulates issues of gender, class and race within the context of nation-building and modernization in Peru. As a domestic woman of the ruling class, who occupies nevertheless a marginal position because of her provincial origins and gender, Matto de Turner develops a complex relationship to dominant ideologies. This semi-marginal position with respect to the discourses of power can help to explain the contradictory nature of many of her texts in which she subscribes to cultural values assigned to the republican female sphere (benevolence, charity, sentimentality) to question the exclusion of women and Indians from the national debate
