Frankie assiste impotente e quasi rassegnato alla propria sorte: egli vede morire sotto i suoi occhi tre fratelli per denutrizione, vive in case puzzolenti e fatiscenti, guarda il padre ubriaco e disoccupato sperperare i soldi del sussidio in continue sbronze, accetta con commiserazione l'incapacità della madre di ribellarsi allo stato di povertà in cui versa, vergognandosi però quando va ad elemosinare gli scarti dei preti per far mangiare i figli. Solo di fronte alla statua della Libertà, Frank comincia a pensare ad un futuro migliore, dove finalmente "nessuno ha i denti marci e tutti hanno un gabinetto."
