The everyday by Marc Newman( Archival Material )

Too often architects create with internalized notions of form and style in search for the exceptional product. Object buildings, one-offs, iconic forms, and monumentality become the goal for these craftsmen. Sarah Wigglesworth, author of The Everyday and Architecture makes a similar claim, "Architecture privileges the final product over the process, the perfected moment of completion over the imperfections of occupation. It concerns itself with lofty ideals rather than gritty realism, searching for the next novelty whilst forgetting the present." My disdain for architecture as object became more evident and I began to look for others who shared my belief that architecture needs to be created based on occupation. Everyday living and ordinary objects used on a daily basis became the focus of this study and a constant theme in my document. I studied this concept to find relationships between architecture and non-architecture. The importance of ordinary activities, the average person going about daily life and references to familiar things should emerge on a physical level in architecture. I would argue the conception of a building showed focus primarily with these activities, and the routines and rituals found in our daily lives
Engaging leadership by Marc Newman( Book )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
The success of ICD10 and ARRA programs requires continuous and positive engagement with senior leadership. This paper explores a range of techniques and methods that significantly improve the quality and type of interactions with senior engagement. Application of these techniques will reduce risk and improve probability of program success. Project managers are working in interesting and challenging times. We are focused on delivering positive business outcomes within the expected time and budget. With such large endeavors underway, logic dictates senior leadership should be engaged with the program or project manager to achieve the desired outcomes. However, project managers often discover the level and type of senior leadership engagement is not supportive of the effort and in worse-case scenarios, the interactions can be counterproductive. It takes an astute project manager with an understanding of management behaviors to identify the causes of this disengagement and be able to remediate the situation. Understanding the organizational culture, management behaviors, and challenges facing senior leadership will enable you to develop and apply precision techniques to encourage the appropriate level of sponsor engagement. This paper explores the real-life problems commonly experienced by project managers as they attempt to manage their sponsors. The recommended process is modeled after common standard process improvement efforts. Only in this case, the elements are specific to the remediation of the relationship with the sponsor. The process is a five-step process. The first step is for the project manager to understand the nature and characteristics of his or her project. Utilizing a simple matrix to ascertain involvement and impact, the project manager establishes the needed level of sponsorship for this project effort. The next step assesses the nature of the relationship with the sponsor. The next step is important to understanding the gap between what is required and what the level of sponsorship currently exists. The last step explores the behavioral methods discussed to attempt to modify the behaviors and improve the interactions with the sponsor such that it is optimal for their program or project. In spite that the methodology appears straightforward the analysis and remediation process needs understanding, empathy, and patience to be executed successfully
