Carmel, 20 Jahre, hält sich mit einem Job als Barkeeperin über Wasser. Sie arbeitet nicht gerade in der feinsten Gegend von Manchester. Am Tresen lernt sie vor allem Loser kennen, Leute, die wie sie selbst keine feste Arbeit haben, in den Tag hineinleben und nachts in Alkohol und Drogen versinken. Freunde und (Ex-)Liebhaber kommen meist aus der Musikszene. Obwohl Carmel und ihre Bekannten noch sehr jung sind, macht sich schon eine gewisse Tristesse bemerkbar. Tony sagt, als er mit ihr Schluss macht: "Du scheinst nicht gerade der glücklichste Mensch zu sein ... Was ich ehrlich gesagt, ein bisschen anstrengend finde". Das trifft den Grundton des Romans genau, der 2002 in London mit dem "Betty Trask Award" für das beste Debüt ausgezeichnet wurde und der Autorin (selbst Barkeeperin) schnell zu einer gewissen Berühmtheit verhalf. Interessante neue Stimme; "Manchesters Antwort auf Charles Bukowski" (laut Klappentext) ist allerdings ein paar Nummern zu hoch gegriffen. Für junges Lesepublikum
