Called back to Denmark following his father's death, Hamlet is shocked to find that his mother has married his uncle Claudius, who has been crowned King, despite the fact that Hamlet was his father's heir to the throne. Suspicious of foul play, Hamlet arranges a play that recreates the murder, as it was told to him by his father's ghost, and becomes convinced that Claudius was indeed the murderer. Hamlet waffles between a desire for revenge and disgust with his desire, and in the process, alienates his girlfriend Ophelia, who commits suicide.
