The first 13 episodes are set in Heian-Period Japan during a time of famine and widespread disease. The imperial court orders Minamoto no Raikō to bring back the magatama jewels, which have the power to restore the well-being of the city but are now in the hands of tribes and clans who are opposed to the court.
