"'The Electric Company' is an experimental TV series that utilizes proven entertainment techniques to teach those basic reading skills identified by reading experts as noticeably lacking in disadvantaged readers. The series, consisting of daily, half hour long programs, uses a 'magazine' format of animation and topical live action skits to dramatize these reading skills for a target audience of 7- to 10-year olds."--1974 Peabody Digest. Begins with skit by "The fighting quartet," who sing, fight, and use words beginning with "qu." An animated segment reinforces the "qu" usage. Dialogue from a vaudeville-style skit and a barbershop skit is shown in captions, with proper punctuation. In "Spidey meets the bookworm," Spiderman tries to stop a giant worm from eating a library. The words "is" and "was" are taught through a skit and a cartoon. A skit featuring Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and a werewolf teaches about a silent letter "e." Also includes live-action version of "Old King Cole."
