One evening his son tells him he's starting to look old, and that he should remarry. With the help of pal Yoshikawa he stages a film audition, ostensibly to cast a new film, but really to find a new wife. Smitten by willowy Asami--whose résumé tells of a terrible injury that destroyed her ballet career--Aoyama falls in love and quickly proposes. Love may be blind, but Aoyama is about to discover how dangerous blindness can be. Aoyama failed to see that during their initial meeting, Asami was auditioning him, too. Unfortunately, he failed the tryout

(Stefan Stiglbauer, Richard Richter, multimedia, Sept. 97) Eine Geschichte von Liebe und Tod. Thriller und Poesie.

Sonatine by Bīto Takeshi( visu )
3 editions published between 1997 and 2002 in Japanese and held by 15 libraries worldwide
One of worlds cinema's most consistently interesting directors, Kitano Takeshi has the uncanny knack of being able to repeat himself without becoming tiresome. The lean and absorbing Sonatine, the filmmaker's fourth feature, bears all the trappings of a typical Kitano gangster flick: an impassive antihero, slapstick comedy, stylish mayhem, and an undercurrent of sadness. Sonatine is a strange hybrid, wedging the aimless story of a beach idyll into a straightforward genre picture. With his weathered face and unimposing slouch, Kitano is an unlikely candidate to play a cool antihero. But as with most of his movies, tight-lipped stoisism and coiled viciousness go a long way. Formally, the picture is as strong as anything Kitano has done. The stark and static compostions have cumulative power, creating a meditative mood thats almost alien to the genre. For all its deviations from the generic norm, the movie doesn't really tell us anything new; it's the telling that makes the movie worth watching. Familiar by Kitano's standards, Sonatine never fails to surprise anyway, a testament to the peculiarity of his vision.--Insert
