Junio de 1940. Centenares de fraceses entre los que se encuentra la pequeña Paulette y sus padres, se dirigen en un desesperado éxodo hacia el sur de Francia. Los aviones nazis sobrevuelan a este gentío bombardeando sin piedad el camino. Los padres de Paulette y su perro mueren durante el ataque. Aluguien lanza el cadáver del animal al río y la niña incapaz de separarse de su perro decide seguirlo, lo que propicia su encuentro con Michel, un chico de once años hijos de unos granjeros que viven por la zona. Michell lleva a su asustada amiga a casa, donde es bien acogida por la familia Dollé. Un hermano mayor de Michel, Georges, ha sufrido un accidente ese mismo día, recibiendo una brutal coz de un caballo desbocado. También ese día, la familia Dollé tiene una nueva y agria pelea con sus vecinos, los Gouards. Al enterarse Paulette de que las víctimas del bombardeo van a ser enterradas en una fosa común, pregunta a su amigo si esto se hace para que no se mojen ni pasen frío, y vuelven a asaltarle la preocupación por su perro. Al día siguiente los niños entierran al animal en un milino desierto, y a Michel se le ocurre la idea de construir allí un cementerio secreto repleto de cruces y flores

Eine Frau und ihr Liebhaber planen den perfekten Mord, doch dann schlägt das unberechenbare Schicksal zu. Um ihren Mann loszuwerden, plant Florence Carale (Jeanne Moreau) gemeinsam mit ihrem Geliebten Julien den perfekten Mord. Julien, ein ehemaliger Fallschirmjäger, soll kurz vor Büroschluss zum Büro von Florence Gatten hochklettern und ihn mit dessen eigener Pistole erschießen. Für den Fall, dass die Polizei Verdacht schöpft und am vermeintlichen Selbstmord zweifelt, legen sich Florence und Julien Alibis für die Tatzeit zu. Alle verläuft fast wie geplant. Julien sitzt bereits wieder in seinem Auto um Florence abzuholen, als er entdeckt er, dass sein Seil noch vom Balkon hängt. Er geht zurück um es zu holen, doch dann schlägt das unberechenbare Schicksal in Gestalt des titelgebenden verhängnisvollen Fahrstuhls zu. Lois Malles erster Spielfilm zollt dem amerikanischen film noir seine Referenz und nimmt gleichzeitig die Atmosphäre der französischen nouvelle vague vorweg. Der Soundtrack von Miles Davies unterstreicht die kühle 50er Jahre-Stilisierung dieses rabenschwarzen Thrillers

Trama: Siamo in Francia, durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Una lunga colonna di civili fugge da Parigi nelle campagne, cercando scampo dai bombardamenti. Tra loro c'è Paulette, una bambina di cinque anni che, durante un raid aereo, perde entrambi i genitori. Con il suo cagnolino in braccio - anch'esso morto - la bimba si imbatte in Michel, un pastorello che la conduce alla fattoria dei propri genitori dove si trova agonizzante il maggiore dei suoi fratelli, travolto da un cavallo sbandato in seguito ai bombardamenti. Paulette non sa cosa sia la morte, non ha ricevuto un'educazione religiosa ma, ascoltando i discorsi dei genitori di Michel, decide di seppellire il suo cagnolino, e di costruire un piccolo cimitero per animali. Quando dopo pochi giorni il fratello di Michel muore, i due bambini rubano le croci dal camposanto per trasferirle nel loro piccolo cimitero. Smascherato, Michel rivelerà il luogo in cui si trovano le croci solo quando il padre prometterà di adottare Paulette. Una promessa che non sarà mantenuta, e la bambina verrà accolta in un istituto di carità
