German jihad : on the internationalization of Islamist terrorism by Guido Steinberg( Book )
5 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 88 libraries worldwide
The pursuit of Italy : a history of a land, its regions, and their peoples by David Gilmour( Book )
5 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in German and held by 50 libraries worldwide
The author, a historian has provided a coherent, persuasive, and entertaining interpretation of the paradoxes of Italian life, past and present. Did Garibaldi do Italy a disservice when he helped its disparate parts achieve unity? Was the goal of political unification a mistake? The author's exploration of Italian life over the centuries is filled with provocative anecdotes as well as personal observations, and is peopled with the great figures of the Italian past, from Cicero to the Medicis, from Garibaldi to the politicians of the twentieth century. Gilmour's account of the Risorgimento, the pivotal epoch in modern Italian history, debunks the nationalistic myths that surround it. Italy's inhabitants identify themselves not as Italians but as Tuscans and Venetians, Sicilians and Neapolitans. This book shows that the glory of Italy has always lain in its regions, with their distinctive art, civic cultures, identities, and cuisines, rather than from its misconceived, mishandled notion of a unified nation. -- From publisher description
The end of representative politics by Simon Tormey( Book )
3 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 46 libraries worldwide
Representative politics is in crisis. Trust in politicians is at an all-time low. Fewer people are voting or joining political parties, and our interest in parliamentary politics is declining fast. But different forms of political activity are emerging to replace representative politics: instant politics, direct action, insurgent politics. We are leaving behind traditional representation, and moving towards a politics without representatives. In this provocative new b

Enemies : a history of the FBI by Tim Weiner( Book )
3 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in German and held by 12 libraries worldwide
Enemies is the first definitive history of the FBI's secret intelligence operations, from an author whose work on the Pentagon and the CIA won him the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. We think of the FBI as America's police force. But secret intelligence is the Bureau's first and foremost mission. Enemies is the story of how presidents have used the FBI to conduct political warfare, and how the Bureau became the most powerful intelligence service the United States possesses. Here is the hidden history of America's hundred-year war on terror. The FBI has fought against terrorists, spies, anyone it deemed subversive--and sometimes American presidents. The FBI's secret intelligence and surveillance techniques have created a tug-of-war between national security and civil liberties. It is a tension that strains the very fabric of a free republic. --Publisher description

The great animal orchestra : finding the origins of music in the world's wild places by Bernard L Krause( Book )
1 edition published in 2015 in German and held by 4 libraries worldwide
This work is the story of one man's pursuit of natural music in its purest form, and an impassioned case for the conservation of one of our most overlooked natural resources: the music of the wild. The author is the world's leading expert in natural sound. He has spent the last 40 years recording ecological soundscapes and has archived the sounds of over 15,000 species, half of the wild soundscapes he has on tape do not exist anymore because of human actions. He divides natural sound into three categories. Biophony is the sound made by animals and plants, like the shrimp that makes noises underwater equivalent to 165 decibels; geophony is natural sound, like wind, water and rain, which led different tribes to have different musical scales; and anthrophony is human generated sound which affects animals as it changes, for example causing disoriented whales to become beached. In this book he invites us to listen through his ears to all three as he showcases singing trees, contrasting coasts, and the roar of the modern world. He paints a picture of the relationship and connection between natural sounds and music that is becoming increasingly difficult to hear. Just as streetlights engulf the stars, he argues that human noise is drowning out the sounds of nature, but that our focus on the visual today is blinding us to this. This book shows why it is critical to preserve what remaining soundscapes we have, and will make you hear the world entirely differently

The (honest) truth about dishonesty : how we lie to everyone--especially ourselves by Dan Ariely( Book )
2 editions published between 2012 and 2015 in German and held by 3 libraries worldwide
Most of us think of ourselves as honest, but, in fact, we all cheat. From Washington to Wall Street, the classroom to the workplace, unethical behavior is everywhere. None of us is immune, whether it's a white lie to head off trouble or padding our expense reports. In The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, award-winning, bestselling author Dan Ariely shows why some things are easier to lie about than others; how getting caught matters less than we think in whether we cheat; and how business practices pave the way for unethical behavior, both intentionally and unintentionally. Ariely explores how unethical behavior works in the personal, professional, and political worlds, and how it affects all of us, even as we think of ourselves as having high moral standards. But all is not lost. Ariely also identifies what keeps us honest, pointing the way for achieving higher ethics in our everyday lives. With compelling personal and academic findings, The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty will change the way we see ourselves, our actions, and others. With a new chapter from the author
