1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 15 libraries worldwide
"The grand master of Italian horror, Mario Bava, captivated audiences around the world with his dreamlike, horrifying, and visually breathtaking films, all of which relied on creativity and visual trickery rather than big budgets. Though marketed as B-movies during the 1960s and 1970s, Bava's films have earned a large cult following for their artistry and their ability to chill viewers with uncanny skill. From his classic first feature, Black Sunday, to rapturous color favorites like Black Sabbath and Danger: diabolik, Bava's work is discussed in depth in this program, which also reveals how much he influenced later horror/sci-fi films, not to mention future generations of directors like Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Brian DePalma"--Container

World War Two ( visu )
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
A compelling look at the portrayal of war, revealing the myths, propaganda & rise of realism in the war film. British wartime films were made as propaganda but also drew on a strong documentary tradition. In Italy, Roberto Rossellini filmed Roma Citta' Aperta during the war, using real soldiers and amateur actors. The film became a classic of neo-realism, symbolic of heroic resistance in Italy. In Japan after the war a powerful strand of anti-war films developed, such as Nobi, that stressed the horrors rather than the heroism of war. Germany's Das Boot showed war not as heroic action, but as days of tedium in cramped conditions, interspersed with terrifying action. More recently Hollywood's Saving Private Ryan shows a realistic and harrowing portrayal of the D-Day landings. Films include: In Which We Serve - Rome Open City (Roma Citta' Aperta)- Nobi (Fires on the Plain) - Das Boot - Idi I Smotri - Saving Private Ryan
