Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve : casting project, September 2009 ( visu )
1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
"The southeast coast of Newfoundland's Avalon Penninsula, the Edge of Avalon Heritage Coast, is also home to Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve. Located between Cape Race and Portugal Cove South, Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve contains the oldest and largest known fossils of complex, multicellular organisms on Earth. Within the Reserve, spectacular fossil-bearing surfaces--representing ancient (579-560 million-year old) deep-sea floors--possess abundance, diversity and density levels of beautifully preserved, large, soft-bodied life-forms that are unrivalled by any of the world's other Ediacaran Period assemblages. However, these surfaces are vulnerable to erosion--both natural forces and the impacts of human foot traffic. In this regard, the famous, globally unique "E" Surface is a key concern. The Casting Project funded by a partnership consisting of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (Department of Environment and Conservation), the Royal Ontario Museum, Oxford University, Queen's University and the Johnson Geo Centre (St. John's), was undertaken in order to create a permanent replica of the best-preserved, 900ft² (84 m²) section of "E". This film documents the fieldwork portion of this ambitious project which was undertaken in September 2009 by Research Casting International (of Trenton, Ontario). Copies of the resulting master cast will be used for ongoing scientific research and education. Due to its outstanding paleontological significance, Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve is on Canada's Tentative List of potential World Heritage properties. Work has commenced on Mistaken Point's application for full UNESCO World Heritage Site status."--Container
