This film presents a collection of stunning performances by the greatest ballet partnerships of recent times. The wonders of modern technology have preserved the dance genius of such legendary names as Fonteyn, Nureyev, Makarova, and Baryshnikov in addition to many less well-known but truly great talents, particularly from Russia's Bolshoi and Kirov companies. These principle artists from the world's leading ballet companies express all the drama and passion, the poignancy and sheer exuberance in some of the most lyrical moments found in classical dance.

Based on real events, this ballet chronicles the love affair between the married heir to the Austrian throne, the drug-addled, dissipated Archduke Rudolf, and his 17-year-old mistress, Marie Vetsera. When Rudolf, disenchanted with the crown, is arrested with a group of demonstrating students, his father, the Emperor Franz Josef, prompts him to renounce his radicalism and forces him into a loveless arranged marriage with Princess Stephanie of Belgium. With court spies tailing him everywhere, Rudolf is eventually able to free himself for a short time and he encounters the passionate Marie who, at first, has no idea of his royal status. The Emperor tries to break up the young couple's relationship, but Marie is so in love with Rudolf that the prince will not give up his womanizing ways.
