Lake of coal : the disappearance of a mining township by David B Cook( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 65 libraries worldwide
"Rotowaro was once a mining township on the Waikato coalfields west of Huntly. Situated in the path of an opencast mine, it was entirely removed in the late 1980s. The destruction of this community is the subject of Lake of Coal, a 20 year photo-documentary project by New Zealand photographer David Cook. This groundbreaking book is a complex weave of photographs and text, a multi-layered work of social history that tells the story of Rotowaro from the point of view of the tangata whenua, the works, their families, management and the photographer himself. Lake of Coal puts a human face on the economic realities of the late twentieth century and asks: What does coal mining mean on a local level? What happens when a community loses the ground beneath its feet?"--Back cover note
Heritage Hamilton : a celebration of the city's historic buildings ( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 29 libraries worldwide
"Heritage Hamilton is a celebration of a selection of historic buildings listed in the Hamilton City District Plan. The buildings featured have been chosen for different reasons: some are opulent, reflecting prosperous times and expansive ideas of early architects and entrepreneurs; others are more modest but no less important - the places where Hamilton families have worked, danced, worshipped and raised their children."--P. 3
Baches of Raglan ( Book )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 26 libraries worldwide
"This is a book about Raglan's older baches. Many were built in the "boom years" of the 50s and 60s when thousands of Kiwis invested in a bit of land by the sea; others are much older and have been handed down through families with long connections to the Raglan community. Built of wood, concrete or firbrolite with iron roofs, they remain largely unaltered. Their owners have no interest in granite bench tops, polished concrete floors and tinted glass" - Publishers blurb
Art for social change : submerged histories of Aaniwaniwa by Rebecca Giles( Book )
2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 16 libraries worldwide
Aotearoa New Zealand's history is often presented in a way that submerges the experiences of Maaori, so that many Paakeha growing up here have little knowledge of Maaori stories of colonisation. It is this disconnection by many Paakeha New Zealanders from our shared history that is a core concern of this research. During 2008, the researcher viewed 'Aaniwaniwa' at Waikato Museum of Arts and History, an artwork dealing with issues of colonisation, dislocation and marginalisation of local Maaori people. She invited viewers of the artwork to participate in interviews, questionnaires and a focus group about their responses. In this report, their responses and learning are linked to current literature regarding transformational learning and conscientisation about hidden histories.--From p.6
Honours 02 : a collection of contemporary art by 2001 Media Arts honours degree graduates ( Book )
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 14 libraries worldwide
Under by Mark Purdom( Book )
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 11 libraries worldwide
"Mark Purdom's Under, is an exhibition of photographs that are the outcome of his recent post-graduate study in England. Mark currently works as a photography tutor at Wintec. Under is located in suburbia's marginal space, defined as the open territories between the city boundary and the countryside: these are spaces that are generated as inevitable by-products of urban spatial development. The site and the BMX trails pictured exist in this sort of 'non-place', outside of cultural classification. The county council theoretically owns the land but they do not enforce any regulations or safety legislation here; the trails are not signposted locally or marked on maps and the exact location is not clearly defined on websites. Therefore to all intents and purposes it is a space that does not officially exist - this adds to the mystery of the site. Purdom presents the mud constructions on the "trails" as enigmatic structures: their physical presence mirroring the ambiguous landscape around them. The images can be viewed as evidence of other unseen things but implicit within the objects pictured are ideas about land-use, settlement, earth building methodology, arguably encoded in a kind of primitivist nostalgia. There is a continual tension betwe en what the photographs describe and what they reveal. In this exhibition, Purdom exploits the potential of photography's indexicality - when it is at its most factual is often when it is most obscure"--Publisher information
