"Im 17. Jahrhundert wird die 16-jährige Griet als Hausmädchen bei dem berühmten Maler Johannes Vermeer eingestellt. Der Meister zeigt sich von dem durchaus klugen Mädchen angetan und macht sie mit der wunderbaren Welt der Malerei vertraut. Schließlich soll Griet ihm sogar für ein Bild Modell sitzen. Doch dies wiederum führt zu Konflikten mit Vermeers Ehefrau, deren Tochter, der Schwiegermutter und der Magd. Zu allem Überfluss hat es auch noch Vermeers Mäzen auf Griet abgesehen... Schriftstellerin Tracy Chevalier ließ sich bei ihrem gleichnamigen Roman von dem anonymen Mädchen aus dem Gemälde des niederländischen Meisters Vermeer inspirieren.
