In this first part, he arrives at the Rénal home in Verrières, where he is to tutor the mayor's two children. He returns to the seminary at Besanc̜on to further his studies for the priesthood. The abbey, Pirard, arranges for him to go to Paris as private secretary to a wealthy and influential nobleman, the Marquis de la Mole.
