Trama: Una nonna racconta una favola alla nipote per farla addormentare: diversi anni prima, nella stessa cittadina, durante un giro di vendite di prodotti di bellezza, Peg ritrova nel tetro castello sulla sommità di una collina un ragazzo particolare, creato da un inventore morto poco prima di potergli trapiantare le mani. Edward, questo il nome del ragazzo, al posto della mani ha infatti delle forbici che se da un lato gli impediscono le pratiche più elementari, dall'altro gli permettono di forgiare perfette statue dalle siepi e altrettanto perfetti tagli di capelli. Il ragazzo, che Peg ha adottato, diventa subito molto popolare nella cittadina e suscita anche l'ettenzione dei media che lo invitano ad una popolare trasmissione televisiva. Ad Edward viene prospettata l'ipotesi di aprire un salone da parrucchiere grazie all'aiuto della comunità, ma la banca non gli concede il prestito necessario e Joyce, un'amica di Peg, visitando quello che dovrebbe essere il salone, cerca di approfittare del ragazzo, che fugge via scosso. Edward è innamorato di Kim, la figlia di Peg, la quale è però fidanzata con l'arrogante Jim, figlio di una famiglia ricchissima e avara. Un giorno Jim decide di servirsi delle capaci forbici di Edward per svaligiare la casa dei suoi genitori, ma una volta aperta la porta della stanza in cui si dovrebbe trovare il bottino, scatta un nuovo allarme che blocca il povero Edward all'interno della casa, mentre Jim e i suoi complici fuggono, nonostante le vibranti proteste di Kim, che vede l'abbandono di Edward come un atto di grande vigliaccheria. Edward viene catturato ed accusato del furto, ma il ragazzo non dice una sola parola per discolparsi. Riaffidato alla famiglia di Peg e del marito Billy, Edward vive in silenzio quella che gli altri abitanti della città pensano sia una colpa, ma Kim, progressivamente, comincia ad allontanarsi da Jim, che non ha voluto ammettere le sue colpe. Jim non accetta passivamente la situazione e decide di dare una lezione a Edward e contemporaneamente riconquistare Kim. Ubriaco e accompagnato da un amico, Jim rischia di investire Kevin, il fratello di Kim, ma Edward riesce a scongiurare il pericolo, pur ferendo lievemente il ragazzo con le lame delle sue forbici. Ma la comunità crede che Edward, ormai in calo di popolarità, abbia ferito Kevin volontariamente e lo insegue fin nel castello in cui il giovane si è rifugiato. Nel castello avviene lo scontro finale tra un Jim accecato dall'odio e un Edward che punta soltanto a salvare Kim: Edward uccide Jim e Kim esce dal castello dicendo alla folla che Edward è morto nel crollo del tetto. L'azione ritorna alla nonna e alla bambina: la nonna non è altri che Kim, che da quel giorno non ha più visto Edward
